The motives were mainly to find new trade routes to get spices, which would then lead to more money. The motives would start off as harmless, but as more discoveries were made, there were lots of people who did lots of bad things. For example, Columbus' motive was to find a new trade route, but once he discovered America he took natives and made them slaves.

The French and the English all wanted to convert the Natives into Christianity. Source 1 and 5 both show pictures of English men arriving to the New World and putting up a cross to symbolize the Natives converting. Source 2 also shows a quote from Queen Elizabeth to Sir Walter Raleigh saying that anyone they come across that is not Christian can have their land taken away from them. This is very similar to how the Spanish treated the Aztecs. The English and the French were also harmful towards the Natives, similar to the Spanish. In source 4, it talks of how John Smith would hunt down Natives and harm them. This is not any different from how the Spanish would fight with the Aztecs.
