         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><em>Cryptococcus neoformans</em>  leads to meningitis or disseminated disease, especially in persons with defective cell-mediated immunity. </li><li>Cryptococcosis represents a major life-threatening fungal infection in patients with severe HIV infection.</li><li>Meningitis and meningoencephalitis, the most common manifestations of CNS cryptococcosis, are usually subacute or chronic in nature. HIV-infected patients may have minimal or nonspecific symptoms.
