-teachers developed a new plan to have students work independently while they work with small groups
-teachers changed the atmosphere of the classroom from managing children's behaviors to instilling reading independently habits.
- the new emphasis for the classroom management is to crete environments where the children learn reading, writing and self-monitoring all in one
- some of the new approaches are: teaching the skill until it becomes a habit, know that each class is different and adapting to them, all students take responsibility to self monitor their behavior, whole class has to practice, define desired behaviors and students encourage each other

-the purpose of the DF is to build the children's stamina in all five tasks so they can "engage fully in meninful authentic reading and writing for an extended time."
-DF has the teachers being their to guide the students and students being more independent once they learn what is expected.(chart on page12)
- in the beginning of the year the students stamina is short and teachers are exemplifying the rounds of DF, as the year progressing they can keep adding time on to their rounds and complete multiple rounds of DF a day
- they like option of choosing the order in which they complete them, but it is nonnegotiable that they complete "Read to self" and "work on Writing" everyday.
-structure of DF is 20 to 30 minutes of Reading or Writing, giving the teacher time to Asses or work with small groups. The focus lesson is about 10 minutes long and is the whole group
-Some Students need to engage in "Listen to Reading", "Read to Someone" or "Word Work"
-teachers need to respond to the needs of the students when using DF

- CAFE is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and expanding knowledge
-teachers incorporate both into the literacy block by breaking apart the block, switching off between CAFE instruction as a whole group and then having the students working independently while the teacher works with small groups.
-or some teachers break apart the block through out the day. and example would be taking fifteen minutes to read independently before lunch.
-"The independence built by modeling and practice and the consistent structure of the focus lesson, check in and independent work time allows individual rounds of the Daily 5 to take place at any point during the day."
-

As I read Chapter one, i was amazed at the theory and thought process that went into creating the Daily Five. The topic of instilling independent workers who can come together as well and learn in my mind is creating students who can in turn go work in in society and already have fundamental skills. I remember having time to read independently in the classroom, especially in third grade, but my teacher had me helping another student with reading. Right there I was learning how to help others too. I feel Daily five should be incorporated in to other subjects just like it was stated in the text. That will help students learn to read all types of materiall and be a good skill for future schooling!
