Boudica's Revolt 47 AD

The Celtic Queen Boudica leads a revolt against the Romans. She burns down three important Roman towns (including London), but eventually the Romans defeat her and she kills herself.

Hadrian's wall is built 122 AD

The Romans build a wall between England and Scotland. The wall is called Hadrian’s wall because the emperor was called Hadrian.

The Anglo-Saxons migrate to England 410–560 AD

The Anglo-Saxons migrate to England from West Germany. The Anglo Saxons were originally Pagan, but converted to Christianity.

The first Viking Raid 793 AD

The Vikings (from Norway and Denmark) raid a monastery called Lindisfarne. This is the first Viking raid in Britain.

At first the Vikings raid monasteries and towns, but then they migrate to North-East England, Scotland and Ireland.

King Athelstan becomes King 927 AD

King Athelstan becomes the first king of England. He unites the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms together to make the Kingdom of England.

The Norman Invasion by William the Conqueror 1066

William, the Duke of Normandy, invades England and becomes the King of England. He defeats the Saxon King Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings.

England invades Wales 1277

Edward I of England invades Wales uniting the two countries.

He then tries to invade Scotland but the Sottish eventually defeat the English and Scotland remains independent. The films Braveheart and The Outlaw King tell this story.

The Anglo-Norman Invasion of Ireland 1069

The Anglo-Normans invade Ireland, which is the beginning of British rule in Ireland.

The Black Death 1348

The Black Death (a pandemic) kills between 30% and 40% of the population of England.

The War of the Roses 1455–1487

A civil war between two parts of the royal family over who will be king. The House of Lancaster who has a symbol of a red rose fights against the House of York who has a symbol of a red rose.

Eventually, Henry Tudor wins and becomes King Henry VII.

Henry VIII - 1534

King Henry VIII wants to divorce his wife because she is too old to have children and they do not have a son. The Pope, who is the head of the Catholic church, will not allow Henry to have a divorce. Henry changes the religion in England to Protestantism.

James I becomes King - 1603

Queen Elizabeth I of England dies. She has no children and her closest relative is King James VI of Scotland, who becomes King James I of England.

The Civil War - 1642-1651

The Parliamentarians fight against the King Charles I. The Parliamentarians win and the kill the king. For 11 years, England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland do not have a King.

England and Scotland Unite - 1707

The Act of Union joins England and Wales with Scotland to make one country called the Kingdom of Great Britain.

The Battle of Trafalger - 1805

The British Navy beats the French and the Spanish navies at the battle of Trafalger. This victory prevents Napolean, the French Emperor, invading Britain.

The Industrial Revolution 1760-1820

German airplanes drop bombs on many cities in the UK. Children are evacuated form the cities to the countryside.

The Republic of Ireland gains Independence 1937
