Find out what activities, plays and athletics your students are involved in so you can check in and ask about it. 

Make eye contact, greet and break away from your device in the halls when walking from place to place. 

small talk in the hallway, at water fountain, lunch, etc. 

Kids love when a teacher is a special guest at their lunch table, even for a few moments. A few teachers came through and greeted kids on 1st day back during a break from the UDL conference. 

Bus duty, greet kids and welcome them at the curb before and after school.

2. implement games that do not interrupt the learning goal, but get students to perk up. For example, have a "third person" activity in class where for the next 15 minutes, everyone in the classroom refers to themselves in the third person. Be a player in the activity. Then spend 10 minutes the next day processing the activity. 

3. Let them know your mission is to enlighten them about awesome and amazing things.
