A study shows that music relies heavily on repetition, and its mainly what Psychologists call the mere-exposure effect. The mere-exposure effect basically means that people tend to prefer things they've been exposed to before rather than hearing or trying new things. I agree completely with Ratliff because he says,” Repetition is a smart psychological operation-a way to make you focus on all that is in the fact nonrepetitive.” It’s a smart idea for a song to have repetition in it because more people would have more reason to enjoy the song. Later in his chapter he says the value of repetition for its own sake has become a shorthand of intelligence. In 1973, Four Organs was criticized badly at Carnegie Hall. The audience simply did not like the music that was being played. He even said the crowd reacted as if red-hot needles were being inserted under fingernails.
