The characteristic of islamic architecture such as geometric patterns and muqarnas is what makes it stand out. This is was also important to the Moorish who did rule at the time of the building of the Alhambra. Overtime there would be changes made with more of a western influence on things. During the Baroque and Renaissance era there would be more Christian features added and it would even be converted to a royal palace of the Spanish crown. With the importance of European colonialism at the time this is where Columbus presented his plan for the expedition across the Atlantic. Overall it is important to understand that is one of the best preserved pieces of Islamic architecture and should be viewed as what it originally was. The monetary was an important cultural center, a place of artistic work and significant literary. Overtime it would become abandoned as the Ottoman Empire came to power since Islam along with Turkish culture would spread to this area and parts of Southern Russia. Before the Ottomans came it is important to understand that this cite had 15 churches and contained around 500 hundred caves indicating how the people who lived here had their own type of architectural style and how their faith as important to them before other empires came along. Built in the 8th century this cite is very important as it is in a very important location that contains Jews, Muslims, and Christians. The rectangular design of the mosque which goes back to early Islamic architecture while the dome of the rock reflects some Byzantine characteristics. For the most part it was used to house religious artifacts and would also become a sacred reliquary for pilgrims that would pass by to make it on their way to Northern Spain. Overtime it would continue to act as a religious center until the start of the French Revolution until it was converted into a manufacturing center for gunpowder. From 1912 it was designated as protected monument. It would stand out for its sharp look with the flying buttress and several features. Overtime the cathedral would become and important symbol of France however, it would go through a lot over the years. During the French Revolution much of the religious value would have been destroyed. It the mid 1800s it we see a restoration that would last within a twenty year period. Overtime it to would be a rebuilt several times as it would be targeted due to religious persecution. From and architectural perspective it does have some unique characteristics that are borrowed from Islam along with architectural practices found on the Indian subcontinent. Its geometric shape and gold dome are what really distinguish it giving it that unique look. Muslims all over the world face the direction of the Kaaba during prayers. After his return to Mecca in 630 prophet Muhammad and his son-in-law destroyed the pagan idols and would help build the mosque around the Kaaba. Overtime under different leaders there would be different additions such as minarets and gates. In more recent times there is the idea for more expansion that would allow for a capacity of 2 million worshipers. This all goes back to the original intention of pilgrimage which is one of the five pillars of Islam.
