This section of the song directly relates to Holden's perception of phony adults. Holden feels that people "are merely players, performers and portrayers" in order to fit in with their peers. This behavior bothers Holden even though he often acts fake towards people himself. Holden may hate phonies in the novel but what he fails to realize is that he is one too. He tries to fit in with the people at his school and tries to appear much older than he really is. Mr.Antolini- Holden's old teacher who lets him crash at his place for the night.
