Limelight by Rush
This song addresses phonies.
"Living in a fish eye lens
Caught in the camera eye
I have no heart to lie
I can't pretend a stranger
Is a long-awaited friend
All the world's indeed a stage
And we are merely players
Performers and portrayers
Each another's audience
Outside the gilded cage
Living in the limelight
The universal dream
For those who wish to seem
Those who wish to be
Must put aside the alienation
Get on with the fascination
The real relation
The underlying theme"
This section of the song directly relates to Holden's perception of phony adults. Holden feels that people "are merely players, performers and portrayers" in order to fit in with their peers. This behavior bothers Holden even though he often acts fake towards people himself. Holden sees all adults as phonies which makes him even more wary of adulthood, wishing he could halt time and never leave childhood.

The topic of being phony, pervert, and moron influence the novel because that is how Holden judges people. He thinks that all adults are phonies and all they care about is being the same. He says how phony the boys at his school are and how his room mate is a moron. Holden may hate phonies in the novel but what he fails to realize is that he is one too. He tries to fit in with the people at his school and tries to appear much older than he really is. The topic of pervert influences the novel because towards the end you see that Holden finds out that one of the adults he actually like turned out to be perverted when he woke up to him petting and admiring him.

Salinger's purpose in including this topic in the novel is to show how Holden negatively sees adults and the people around him. Also, he shows how Holden is hypocritical and judges the people around him when he acts the same way. He reveals how Holden thinks all the adults and people act fake around each other. Holden is out there also acting like that when he is around different people like Ackley or Stradlater or when he tries to act older to drink.
