(Ashton's group)
Frictional unemployment, is the the unemployment that exists due to workers transitioning between jobs. This type of unemployment will always exist in the economy. Oftentimes frictional unemployment is the result of workers searching for better jobs. Frictional unemployment is increased during a period of expansion as workers look for better jobs and decreased during a recession as workers are worried about their ability to get better jobs. Frictional unemployment allows workers to find better jobs and for employers to find qualified workers. Examples of frictional unemployment include students who just graduated college and are now searching for jobs and seniors leaving retirement to rejoin the labor force.

(Jessica Kwok's group)

It is a longer-lasting form of unemployment caused by shifts in an economy and extraneous factors such as technology, competition and government policy. It occurs when there is a mismatch between what companies need and what workers can offer. For example, France faced a recession due to natural disasters and strike movements. A large portion of its work force was participating in temporary second level jobs with little chance of them being promoted to long-term contracts. This resulted in structural unemployment as there was a lack of job flexibility and mobility, sidelining many workers that had not adapted to new skills.

(Kieu's group)
Cyclical unemployment is a type of unemployment that relates to the cyclical trends in the business cycle or industry. When demand and goods for services drop, production slows and businesses need less workers. Cyclical unemployment and GDP have an inverse relationship. As GDP rises, cyclical umemployment falls. The 2008 financial crisis is an example of when this type of unemployment occurred.

(Jacob's group)
A discouraged worker is a person who is eligible for employment and is able to work, but is currently unemployed and has not attempted to find employment in the last four weeks. Discouraged workers have usually given up on searching for a job because they found no suitable employment options and were met with lack of success when applying.
An example is: A store closes from bankruptcy and its workers lose their jobs. Some may end up as discouraged workers if they have not been able to find another job, give up job-seeking and live as a dependent or without salary.

Underemployed Workers includes those workers who are highly skilled but working in low paying jobs, workers who are highly skilled but working in low skill jobs and part-time workers who would prefer to be full time. This is different from unemployment in that the individual is working but is not working at his full capability.
One instance is someone with a college degree working a service or retail job (e.g. bartender or cashier).

Natural Rate of Unemployment

(Kyra's group)
The natural rate of unemployment is a combination of frictional and structural unemployment that persists in an efficient, expanding economy when labor and resource markets are in equilibrium. Often, the natural rate of unemployment is seen in lower level jobs that people get temporarily, such as jobs at a restuarant that a teen in high school may get for a year or 2, or a job one might get in college. Natural rates of employment exist because workers are always coming and going and looking for new / different jobs.
