During the Middle Ages monsters became part of stories and tales, some of them even came from Biblical references because of Christianity beginning to get really serious throughout this time. The monsters included: Dragons, Unicorns, The blemmyae, Melusine (that is in fact the logo of starbucks), etc... Some of these are even relevant today in TV shows, books and movies. Source: https://www.medievalists.net/2013/10/top-ten-monsters-of-the-middle-ages/

Half-human, half-beasts hybrid monsters where still a thing through the Early Modern period. Famous monsters, which you probably haven’t heard about include: The Thanacth, Elephant-boy, Three-headed lambs, and even half-human, half-pig monsters. Most of these where feared horribly because the fear of the devil was really relevant throughout this period, since Christianity was becoming more and more popular. Because of this scientists created a branch in science called teratology, which is the study of human congenital abnormalities, that would later prove these to be fake. Source: https://guides.library.uab.edu/c.php?g=1014328&p=7346805

The monsters during the Mid Modern period can be more recognizable since they come from books that inspired a good amount of movies we can watch in the comfort of our home today. Some of these monsters are: Dracula the vampire, Edward Hyde, Frankenstein, and others that you might have seen in halloween. These were really popular at their time because gothic literature was having a lot of popularity in this period. As you can see all those monsters made a huge cultural impact because you still hear about them today. Source: https://americanliterature.com/gothic-literature-study-guide

During the contemporary period, horror movies and books are a big hit. Not because we are particularly scared of them but because we like the “thrill”. Weird, isn’t it? The monsters we see the most are zombies, evil spirts, clowns and dolls. But there are classics that started it all like, Pennywise, form Stephen’s King “It”, Edward Scissor Hands by Tim Burton, and even Godzilla was huge at its time. Psychological horror is also a huge hit since by personal opinion can be even scarier. Horror or monster culture is the way it is today because of the influences of ancient tales of monsters and horror books.
