Fossils of the Mesosaurus, an extinct reptile whose population once lived all together, are found in two locations that are separated by thousands of kilometers of ocean. The question is how did they get separated. I am a geologist and geology is the science that deals with the earth's physical structure and substance, its history, and the processes that act on it. The mesosaurus fossil could have traveled a long distance because of the movement of Earth's plates. Plates are rock that is founds under continents and also under the ocean. The plates can move because of a layer of the Earth called the mantle which is made out of soft, solid rock.

When plates move it can cause convergent or divergent, convergent is when two plate move towards each other and form a trench, a divergent is when one plate moves away from itself and forms a mid-ocean ridge. Moving plates cause earthquakes because of the ground moving and an also cause volcanoes to become active. The plates moved from Pangea and Gonwanaland are what the plates and continents moved from this because they used to all be connected into one big chunk of land. In conclusion mesosaurus fossils are found on two different continents because of the motion of the plates because scientists used GPS to track how plates move, plate movement causes earthquakes and volcanoes, and trenches and mid-ocean ridges are formed.
