In order to be strong and successful, there needs to be a strong foundation put in place. Mountains are similar to the top-down management structure of companies because, at the lower level, managers provide a more personalized understanding of their workers same with the base of a mountain providing more sustenance for growth.

Top Down vs. Bottom Up Management: What's the Difference?

There is a difference between a leader and a manager. A manager is focused on the goals and the future of the company, whereas a leader wants to help the workers achieve their goals that also help the company. A manager may not necessarily care how the task is completed, so long as it is finished on time and properly. The leaders will help guide and show how to do the task to ensure it is done well and that there is no confusion. I feel if there were more leaders in the world instead of managers, it would be a much happier place.

Leadership vs. Management: the 5 Main Differences (smarp.com)

I enjoyed learning about the different global business strategies that companies can utilize. Before the pandemic, I traveled a lot to different countries and got to see first-hand how a lot of companies used the Multi domestic strategy. Companies such as Starbucks, Mcdonalds, and 7-Eleven in other countries such as Japan and the Philippines have specialized seasonal flavors and products that they offer that are unique to that country. 7-Eleven in Japan is very much so a convenience store. They have everything that you could need, from a hot fresh meal, make-up, button-up shirts for work, alcohol for after work, and you can even pay your bills there! There were many times when we would start the night at a 7-Eleven and begin our mornings there as well because of how perfectly convenient it was. That is a testament to how the Japanese culture took the Multi domestic strategy and ran with it to make it work for their lifestyle.

Why Japanese 7-Eleven's Are The Best (buzzfeed.com)

Being in the military, we do yearly "midterms" where we list our strengths, areas of improvement (weaknesses), and goals that we wish to accomplish. When I read about the SWOT Analysis and it described the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats that a company identifies as harmful and helpful to achieve its goals, I related it to my midterms. How can we better reach our goals and where are we lacking? Is there anything in our way? Do we need help from an outside source? These are the questions that I think of when I look at the SWOT chart and when I think of my midterm.

What Is a SWOT Analysis and How to Do it Right in 2021 (With Examples) (liveplan.com)

I do believe that the division of labor is beneficial to some extent. Breaking down a task too much definitely can make a job boring and repetitive. If a task is broad enough though, it can still be interesting each time it is completed. For me, I am an Aviation Electrician's Mate with a specialty in C-2 aircraft. This means that anything to do with the electricity, electrical components, signals, instruments, wiring, and sorts all fall under my jurisdiction. The problem can change from day to day with the airplane never quite being the same which leads to a lot of troubleshooting which is fun. Some things are as easy as changing a light bulb or repairing a broken wire, others are harder like changing a generator or an actuator. My job is not the same as an Aviation Mechanic who is responsible for the engines or an Aviation Structural Mechanic who is responsible for the airframe and hydraulics of the aircraft. We all have broad specialized jobs that are divided but when put together help an airplane fly.

Navy Enlisted Ratings in the Aviation Community (thebalancecareers.com)

Communication is extremely important on all levels whether they are personal or professional. One thing that can make or break an effective manager or leader is communication and how it is presented as well. A manager can repeat everything from the top down but if it is said with negative emotion, the people below them are going to feel some type of way. Body language is also a form of communication. How we greet each other, pass one another in the hallway, to telling your work friend the boss would like to see them. The body and face can sometimes say a lot more than our own mouths do.

The Role of Body Language in Communication - MCIS Language Solutions

It was interesting to learn about how civilian HR departments do similar things that the military does. The military does not have a standard "human resources" department, we are judged by our peers on a panel where they look at our history and see what kind of person we were and the crime that was committed and judge punishment based on that. Unfortunately, if the person was a good person on paper and does not have a record, they usually get a slap on the wrist, even though the military has a zero-tolerance policy for a lot of things. With this sort of "punishment" happening regularly, that is the reason so many people are getting out of the military. It is one good ole' boys club.

Women and the Good Ole Boys Club | Psychology Today

I loved this lesson. Being an instructor for the military, we learned a lot about intrinsic and extrinsic motivating factors to get our students to want to learn the subjects. It is incorporated into every lesson that we teach, we let the students know what they could get out of the lesson. When I go back to sea duty and I am more in a leadership position, I plan to use these tools to help motivate my junior Sailors to want to be better. I fully believe that if we stay hungry and motivated, great things will come our way, and I want to instill that into the new generation because they are the ones who are going to take over some day and succeed.

12 Motivation Techniques for the Workplace | Indeed.com

Being a leader and being a manager, I believe, is similar but different. As a leader, we want to encourage others to all reach a common goal together. As managers, we want the job done and we want it done well. The two are similar because the common goal is finishing the job, but it is how the job is accomplished that defines a leader versus a manager. A leader will make sure everyone has the tools necessary and understands the assignment. Managers assign a task and a deadline.

Discover 10 Of The Most Inspiring Leaders Of All Time (inspiringleadershipnow.com)

I love the idea of measuring organizational performance in terms of evaluations. In the military, we get an annual evaluation and a mid-term evaluation. However, I do not agree with how we do our evaluations. Our evaluations are a career make-or-break kind of situation that can help you advance to the next rank or keep you where you are. They are definitely rigged as the evaluations move up the ranks to help out certain individuals instead of using them as an actual performance measuring tool. During the debriefs, however, is where the real information comes out, how well or poor the person is doing and what they can do better and such. Unless it is documented though, it is all water under the bridge in my opinion.

COMPLETE Navy Eval Writing Guide (E1-E4 examples)- DODReads

Everything that is done in the military has a series of checks and balances. These checks and balances are managed by the Quality Assurance department, also called "QA". I love working in QA because I enjoy following the rules and ensuring other people also follow the rules. I would walk around with my checklists and perform spot checks on different work centers to make sure they were in compliance with the rules. In our line of work, if rules are not followed, there is a chance to crash an airplane and I took my job very seriously to ensure the safety of my pilots and crew. It was my time in QA that drove me to my degree choice in Industrial Management Safety.

What is Industrial Safety? - Definition from Safeopedia
