His parents were named David and Elizabeth Poe. Edgar had two other siblings named Henry and Rosalie. Edgar's mother had separated from his father and she took the three kids with her. But soon after that, his mother died and Edgar was adopted by Mr. And Mrs. John Allan, which was how he got the name "Allan". So he went to Boston and joined the U.S. Army in 1827. While he was in the military, he did very well and ended up ranking as sergeant major. But soon after that, Mrs. Allan had died and John Allan had started trying to be friendly towards Edgar. Then John signed Edgar's application to West Point.Once he started going to West Point, he was a cadet. But he soon had to leave and go back home because John refused to send Edgar any money at all.
