1.Batman embodies self-reliance because his parents were killed when he was a boy, so he was forced to grow up and support himself at a very young age. He has learned to "trust thyself" and to "Bravely let him speak the utmost syllable of his confession." Batman is self-sufficient and powerful and is able to take on the world on his own.

3. An example of a great person who was misunderstood was Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh was very misunderstood and people failed to see the value in his work until after he had passed. He made over 2,000 paintings and it wasn't until after he passed away that his art became popular. Van Gogh is now remembered as one of the greatest and most influential artists to ever live, however, when he was alive, nobody understood his work, and he was seen as just an average man.

5. Emerson uses a variety of appeals in his piece to make the reader feel connected and attached to what he is saying. Emerson uses logos when he states, "Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh." Emerson writes this to show the reader that it's okay to feel misunderstood or misplaced because every great person that has ever lived felt misunderstood at one point in their life. Emerson utilizes pathos by saying, "Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of our own mind. Absolve you to yourself, and you shall have the suffrage of the world..." Emerson exclaims that the only thing holding you back from your full potential is your own head. He says to set yourself free from all your worries and self-doubt, and you will achieve great things. Finally, Emerson uses ethos when he writes, "A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best; but what he has said or done otherwise will give him no peace." Emerson asserts that in order to be happy and feel truly content with yourself, you must put everything you have in everything you do and always give your best. He states that everything you did that you did not put your heart into will leave you feeling unsettled and you will never find peace.

2. The song "Titanium" by Sia was heavily influenced by Emerson's essay. In the song, Sia writes about remaining titanium even in hard situations when it seems as if everybody is against her. She relies on herself to remain strong and powerful. She writes, "You shoot me down, but I won't fall, I am titanium." This connects to Emerson's essay because Emerson explains how you should "speak what you think today in words as hard as cannon balls." He means, never back down ans always stand up for what you believe is right. Both the song and the essay show how you must remain tough in difficult situations and stand up for yourself, even if people are trying to tear you down.
