It's spread through unprotected sex (anal, vaginal, or oral), mother to baby (nursing, pregnancy, or birth), or blood. It has to be diagnosed medically, in a lab.

symptoms:
from 3-90 days of intital exposure sores appear on the mouth, genitalia, or rectem.
after 4-10 weeks a rash is formed.
after 3-15 years of initial infection, if left untreated it can damage organs like the brain, eyes, or heart. It can also damage nerves.

Syphilis has four stages, the farther along a person is with the disease.
The stages are in order, primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary.

Primary: this is when the sores appear, if cured here the sores stay, but will go away after time. The patient should still receive treatment, just to be safe.

Secondary: the rash appears, being cured here will stop it from going to Latent, and if your unlucky enough, Tertiary.

Latent: there are no symptoms, untreated Syphilis can stay in this stage, but sometime it goes to the last stage

Tertiary: this is when the damage occurs, being cured here doesn't reverse the damage it does.

There are also neurosyphilis (affecting the brain and nerves) or ocularsyphilis (affecting the eyes). These can happen at any stage.

Treatment/Cure:
Penicillin is a cure for Syphilis, but any damage the disease has done can't be reversed. The patient should wait until the Syphilis sores are gone before continuing sexual contact, and advise any sexual partner to get tested.

If your allergic to penicillin you can be treated with other medicines, including but not limited too: doxycycline, tetracycline
if you get neurosyphilis you can be given: ceftriaxone

It's very important to talk with your couple because STD's are very serious diseases and not all of them are curable. Its important to go to the doctors to check your self out because you never know if you caught up with a disease because not all of the STD's have symptoms, you can get STD's and not know that you have it.
