So You Want To Talk About Race

This is a nonfiction book that candidly discusses topics of race such as the "n" word, cultural appropriation, and school to prison pipeline. Oluo is a black woman and speaks very personally about her experiences with these topics. It is definitely a book that requires self-reflection. I learned so much reading this book.

Emotion, plot, time travel, and betrayal are perfectly encompassed in this masterpiece of a book, which also happens to be named one of the best books of 2020.

I loved both of Bennett's book. She writes about African American communities in a beautiful style. This one is about twin sisters, one of who decides to "pass" as a white person. In making this choice, the sister loses connections with her old life and culture which effects her child, too. It's such a great book.

This is a fun series that reimagines American History: what if instead of becoming the first President, George Washington became the first American King? The book covers the newest generation of royalty in America: three siblings who are struggling with the pressures and expectations of being royal. Just a light, fun read.

However, a car accident and a dead friend haunt his memory as he starts finding inconsistencies in his past. There is also a running thread of pre-colonial Central American history, which I thought added a unique layer to the book. Given the auditory nature of the book, I'd recommend listening to it as an audiobook.

Each chapter follows the next generation of the family. Yaa Gyasi is a brilliant writer. Her newest book is excellent, too.

Educated tells Tara Westover's story about growing up in Idaho on her family's junkyard. She was home schooled, but barely learned, and spent her days working with her dad. Through abuse, mental illnesses, and incredible stories, Tara does the unexpected. This memoir is very eye opening and honestly changed my life. GO READ IT!!!!!

This book is a great mixture of history with fantasy elements. The word building and scenery is really well done along with the context and backstories. While the beginning could be a little slow, it definitely picks up in pace, and by the end there is so much plot twists and excitement that make it an interesting and fun read. I recommend this book if you're into fantasy and magic elements mixed into the real world.

I would highly recommend this book series if you enjoy reading books about historical fiction and different perspectives. This series is somewhat of a tougher read and the books are a little longer than your average book, but the book is constantly thrilling, entertaining, and even at times informative. The Century Trilogy follows the lives of five interrelated families (American, English, German, Russian, and Welsh) from the beginning of World War I to the end of the Cold War.
