This helped loosen our minds for the next few thinking exercises through the week.

In this thinking activity, our group was given a symbol and a group of the population, which were a square with a ^ in the middle, and a software engineer. With these two pieces of information, we had to come up with a product which addressed the target population of software engineers and also used the given symbol in some way. Our final product was an educational app where aspiring software engineers could learn the basics of coding as well as provide a guidebook for different languages, using the given symbol as our logo for the app.

This was the final thinking activity we did in the first week, and it consisted of a topic, which was A method of communication, and a box of items. From the box, our team could pick any items and as many as we wanted, and we had to come up with a method of communication, following the topic, with the materials we chose. As shown in the image, we assembled these pieces into various shapes, which consists of two main parts, two cups with zip-ties in between them, and a cassette with objects sticking out of it. Our design was meant to be a secure and easily destructible way of sending messages in Morse code using the zip-ties to mark out the dots and dashes, and the grey object acting as a receiver and a sender. The cups were meant to be a storage compartment for extra zip-ties to be used when one eventually reached its end.

This task laid most of the groundwork for my final solution as it was an effective and easy way to understand the problem.

So, my problem was that some students would like to get some work done during break times, but the environment disallows such things to happen. The two main issues that students face in this scenario are the extremely loud environment everywhere around the school as well as teachers being strict about device usage during break times. Now, you might think that a student could just go to the hub, but from what I have gathered, the hub is as loud as any other place in the school. My solution to this problem is to introduce more of the small rooms which can be found in the walls of 3CL. But not just more of these rooms, more of these rooms upgraded. These new study rooms would be booked out by students on a virtual platform accessible on daily access, and they would feature sound-proofing from the outside so that there are no distractions from work. The only sound from the outside would be bells or alarms. Entry would be through student IDs to allow for only those with bookings to get it, and for people who want to work in groups within these rooms, there will be larger versions of these soundproof rooms. This would form the perfect studying environment, incorporating the quietness of the music practice rooms without needing to be a music student, with no distractions of any kind.

In this task, I used collaboration and communication to discuss topics with my partners and other peers to gain information and opinions on how to progress forward and design a plausible solution. Additionally, I used creative/critical thinking when designing the solution as there were many options to choose from and only one would fully solve the issue. Finally, I displayed citizenship and character during my interviews by asking follow up questions to everything to try and collect the most information in the politest way possible, while trying not to push on topics which may have been hard for my partner to answer and trying to actively empathise with their issues.

The most difficult part of this activity was choosing the correct questions to ask during the interview and formation of the empathy map. This was difficult as examples were a little vague, and targeted more towards designing a product and already having some baseline information. For the task however, the questions had to be different from the examples to make sure that the same answer was not gotten multiple times, which can be quite difficult in the moment. This can be overcome by having a predetermined set of questions going into the interview to make sure that I know what I will ask.

The most intriguing thing about our topic, which is mainly healthy eating in the Gilles Plains community, would be the fact that most of the area is filled with older generations. This is interesting because generally, fast food is not associated with older people, making the issue of healthy eating seem unlikely. This is answered mostly by the fact that the people who are younger do tend to eat out a lot more than usual, and that sometimes in this specific area older people are eating out alongside their children and grandchildren.

The persuasive and presentations techniques that we found to be helpful in the writing of our infomercial included the use of Logos, which refers to the use of data and facts to prove something is an issue, as well as a little bit of Pathos, which targets emotion to convince a viewer of an issue. In our infomercial, this can be seen as the use of results from research, quoted from our introduction "Research from the World Health Organisation shows that the leading cause of obesity, and terminally high cholesterol levels is because of an unhealthy intake of food, mostly fast foods." This sentence references studies conducted by the WHO and how this relates to the audience. Additionally, we used Pathos in our first sentence: "Do you want this to happen to you or maybe a friend or family member?" (with "this" referring to the previous scene where a person suffers from a heart attack). By relating the situation to the audience, we captured their attention for the rest of the video.

In the future, we could improve communication between ourselves regarding these topics and therefore improve our Collaboration skills.

The problem that we chose as a group was sleeping disorders within people around adolescent age. We decided to look at this issue as is known to often impact people around our age, with many of our friends having trouble sleeping.

Our group collaborates well in regards to delegating responsibilities surrounding work as well as discussing which topics to add or take out of the presentation/script that we made. To improve collaboration as a team, we could establish more ways of communicating between us as well as contacting each other outside of class to work on ideas better. Additionally, more views from each participant could be incorporated into our final idea.

The main barrier we are facing before the Expo is the specifics of our final solution. Because of some mismatched schedules in terms of absences, our solution and final product are being made independently, with not much communication between team members regarding it. This is overcome by emailing each other the final details, as well as asking each other questions in lead up to the final presentation.

Strengths:

A strength I saw in another group's presentation was their ability to redesign existing technology and keep the functionality of the original product, but add a feature to it which would benefit many households. This was in the form of more sustainable practices with washing machines, which they were able to expand on and allow for more ease of use and less wastage.

Weaknesses:

A weakness I saw in a group's presentation was that they did not seem to understand their own problem and solution fully, and had not seemed to have thought out their solution particularly well, which was demonstrated by the questions asked after their presentation. This meant that they were unable to produce an effective pitch and it was much less persuasive than other pitches which were presented.

Ideas:

The really great ideas that we saw through the presentations included the washing machine brand, the new food chain (FitFastFood) and the improved solar panel design (SunBlox). These were good ideas as they targeted specific problems which were easily applicable to many within our community, making them useful and effective products.
