I would keep my lesson simple so it is easy for them to understand. I would have them come up with a list of positive behaviors and negative behaviors and write them in two columns on a big piece of paper. I would then add to the list on either side of some examples they did not think of as a class. I would then explain that the positive side is how we treat our classmates online, and the negative is how we do not because that is not how we would want to be treated. I would then hang the list in the classroom for future reference if needed.

Lesson Idea- My first lesson will be about how to use the internet in a safe and effective way.

Learning Objective- Third grade students will be able to gain knowledge on proper behavior when communicating online.

Lesson Plan- To start off my lesson I will talk to my third graders about how the internet is a huge part of our lives and our education. I will address the idea that when we are in school there can be no inappropriate behavior when using the internet, especially since at this age, this is when they start to explore the internet more than they should be. I will have the students follow along with me reading an article about what Netiquette is and why it is so important to have. After we read the article I will have a group discussion and ask the class a few questions. The questions I will ask are:

What rules should keep in mind when online?

What are some good things to do in your online communication?

What are some things to avoid when online?

Once we have this group discussion and the third graders are gaining a greater understanding about Netiquette, I will then do the activity.

Activity:
1. I will split my class up into groups of two. Using their chrome books, one person will send a message to his or her partner that violates email etiquette. Then, the other partner will have to ask the recipient to correct the message and return it to the sender.

2. Once the email etiquette activity is done, I will have students use a search engine to find some online FAQs. Each pair will write down three facts that they found and will share their favorite fact with the class.

3. I will then make an anchor chart about the facts the students found. The chart will be then hung in our classroom so we have the rules of Netiquette for the rest of the year.

Lesson Idea- My next lesson for my third grade class will be about the power of words and what you should do when someone uses mean and hurtful language on the internet. This will cover the digital citizenship aspect.

Lesson Objective-

Understand that it's important to think about the words we use, because everyone interprets things differently.

Decide what kinds of statements are OK to say online and which are not.

Lesson Plan- I will start off my lesson talking about how some words that are used online may come off differently than what the word was intended to be. For example, if someone said as a joke "you are so annoying" over text, that person who received the text may take that to heart and be upset over it, when the sender truly just meant it as a joke. I will then talk about how you need to think before you send. "If I send this, will it hurt someone's feelings?"

Once this introduction is over, I will have the students go back to their seats and discuss with their group words and sayings that would be said on the internet that might hurt someone's feelings. After they are done with that, they will all come and stand in a circle on the carpet and go up to each of their classmates and say one of the words or phrases they came up with. This will allow them to see and hear how hurtful these sound and show that it should never be said on the internet.

We will then come together as a group and have a discussion about what things are okay to say on the internet. We will come up with many ideas that I will make a poster out of. I will do the same like I did with my Netiquette lesson and hang up the poster once it's completed. The correct and nice phrases will be hung all year so the students will be able to look back and know that the power of words can change everything.

I was very interested to learn about Netiquette because before this class, I had never even heard the term. I think both Netiquette and Digital Citizenship are crucial for students and educators to learn. Implimenting them in our day to day lives as teachers will help the students get a better understanding of what is it. It is very easy for students to believe that because they are behind a screen, they can get away with a lot more compared to in person scenarios. Teaching Netiquette can show that this is not true and even help them to believe they do not want to even undergo this negative behavior.

After doing my research, I am only more adamant over the fact that this is a very important topic for all grade levels to learn. Especially in our day and age, we use the internet as a learning source everyday in classrooms all over the country. Teaching proper behavior should be a priority if we are going to continue using it like we do. If we teach it starting at a young age, children will better understand the importance of good behavior online.

I did not realize it consisted of the golden rule, cyberbullying, reporting negative behavior, and much more. This all just shows how we as educators have to do research on all these topics to better educate our students. The more that we are willing to learn, the more we can show the positive and negative behaviors that can occur online.

Prior to this class and my research, I have never heard of the terms Netiquette and Digital Citizenship. After learning what they both meant, I had an idea about it but never really went in depth about how important they are. Netiquette and Digital Citizenship is very important to have and understand when becoming a teacher. The internet is so big now-a-days in education that you need to make sure your students are doing the work that needs to be done, without being inappropriate on the internet. As a future teacher, I know what I should be telling my students when we use the internet, and some of the things will be, not everything you see on the internet is true, I will talk about cyberbullying, and also mention how anything you post online is there forever so be smart about what you post. When I was younger and just started using the internet, I wish these terms were used more so myself and my peers would truly understand the meaning of them and I think it would have made parents not so worried to allow their children on the internet.

What I didn't consider prior to doing my research was how many rules there are to both Netiquette and Digital Citizenship. I have always know to be smart on the internet, never post something that will ruin my future, and to be nice. Something I didn't consider that were apart of these was to use of proper grammar. Grammar is huge in our world when it comes to education, jobs, and everyday life. If you don't use proper grammar on the internet, many people who want to hire you for a job may see that your grammar is bad and won't want to hire you. Another thing with grammar is that many children like to us abbreviations to things, like "idk" for "I don't know", this is something that younger children should stop doing because in the long run, they need to be focusing on using correct grammar and vocabulary. I never would have consider this to be a rule of Netiquette and Digital Citizenship, but I understand why it is crucial to be a rule.

After my research on Netiquette and Digital Citizenship, I have come to realize it is so crucial to have when being a future teacher, working with children, and being a role model for them. Children need to learn that the internet is not what you think it is and it can turn bad very quickly. If I understand the proper ways to be on the internet, then I can teach my students that so they can get the best education I can give them. Being that role model for my students, I need to teach them that you need to be careful what you read, post, gossip about, and so much more because all of that can become very dangerous and not be good for them. With education being online a lot recently, I want to make sure my students are learning what they need to learn and not going off on websites and social media that is not good for them. If I can teach them the proper ways to use the internet and show them to have Netiquette and good Digital Citizenship, then I will feel accomplished and not worry about what could happen when things are done on the internet.

Then ask who has ever seen hateful things on the internet. I would then ask them if they have ever had hateful and rude things said about them on the Internet. We would then transition into how serious cyberbullying is and how proper behavior online is crucial. The students will then go onto their computers and see how many links show up when they type in cyberbullying. After they have finished we would take a toll of how many of those links talked about how tragic cyberbullying and other inappropriate behavior has ended. Then I will pull up a video discussing proper behavior online for their age group. Especially social media and stress the importance of how once you put something out on the Internet or say something it is there forever.

The class will split up into partners and talk about what their parents have told about staying away from strangers in person. After they have discussed for a few minutes we will then come together and share a few thoughts. I will spend quite a bit of time discussing how online predators are very common on social media such as Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook. I will explain how the best way to protect your self is by having a private account and don't accept messages or request from people you don't know. And don't go out giving your different social media handles to random people. For my gamers I will stress how when being on a stream or live and you are chatting with others don't share your age, real name, or where you live unless you personally know the other people on the game.

At first I was quite confused as to what netiquette was because I never heard the term before. After learning the definition of what it is I realized that I knew what it was but never knew the name. Our generation was the first real generation to deal with social media. It's really important to teach Netiquette and Digital citizen to younger ages because in todays society kids are getting phones and getting on social media at a much younger age than we ever did. I knew about some of the rules of netiquette and it was interesting learning about some other ones. Such as use emoticons, and don't spam. At younger ages kids are getting even more tech savvy and becoming even more cruel online. They don't think about the consequences of their actions so we as educators need to teach them how to properly and safely use the Internet and social media.

But I didn't realize that things such as my skill level with technology and making sure that my grammar is at a respectable level, can affect my ability to get a job significantly. Because Im going to be the one teaching children how to properly type and use the internet. We as educators are responsible for how these kids will use the internet and social media, so we need to start teaching kids at even younger age how to behave on the internet and use proper Netiquette and Digital Citizenship skills.

After my research I learned some new things about Netiquette and Digital Citizenship but it also supported the things I already knew. Being a kid in todays society has not become any easier it's only become harder. Social media can make either make kids like themself or hate themself. The Internet can be an amazing thing such as being able to search up the most random thing in the world and getting an answer. But it can also be so dangerous and painful. We as teachers not only want to teach kids the curriculum but we want them to leave our classroom as decent human beings who are compassionate and kind. But the internet and social media can ruin that for a lot of people. Kids find it so easy to be mean behind a screen, but with the proper examples and role models maybe we as teachers can prevent this. Not only do we need to teach them how to behave online we need to teach them how to protect their self and their information. Kids are so quick to click something and think nothing of it without reading it first. One click can lead to a lot of issues, so by teaching them properly we can try to protect them in the real world and the cyber world.
