Pony's motivation

We think Ponyboy’s motivation is his desire to be something other than what he is. He always wants to escape his life, and jump into someone else's.This explains why he likes “to watch movies undisturbed so [he] can get into them and live them with the actors”(3). An example of his motivation is when he saves the kids from the church. Greasers are renowned for being the “bad kids” and one reason of the many is that Pony wanted to save those children because he wanted to be the hero for once. He wanted to be something other than what he was recognized for. Another example of this is when he talks to Cherry about her life and how the Socs really are.” ‘I'll bet you think the Socs have it made. The rich kids, the West-side Socs. I'll tell you something, Ponyboy, and it may come as a surprise. We have troubles you've never even heard of. You want to know something?’ She looked me straight in the eye. ‘Things are rough all over.’ ” (31). He’s probably curious because he has the desire to experience it, just for the sake of knowing what it's like. This motivates him to keep going because he has so many other adventures to come, and he knows it.

We believe Pony's strength is that he is very creative. He can escape reality and enter his make believe worlds whenever he needs to. This is why he loves books movies and has lots of dreams. This is a strength because he will be in a bad situation and start to feel negative but then he can dream and that can calm him down or even put him in a better mood. An example of this is when he gets mad at Darry for hitting him.“Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door.” ( 44 ). He runs away and escapes to his make believe world/dream world and calms down, and even builds up enough courage to talk to Darry. This shows his creativeness by showing he can slip into a dream world to calm himself down.

Pony's flaws

FLAWS - I believe that Ponyboy’s flaw is that it takes a while for him to accept certain things. He doesn't want bad things to happen to him and when they do, he doesn't take it very well. One example of this is when Johnny dies. "Johnny [was dead. Don't think of them, I

thought. (Don't remember how Johnny was your buddy, don't remember that he didn't

want to die. When Johnny died, Pony went into a period of depression because he just couldn't accept that Johnny died. The worst part is that he and Johnny had bonded a lot during their escape from society which made accepting Johnny’s death even harder than it already was . Another example of this is when Johnny killed Bob. He just couldn’t accept that the puppy of the group had turned into a bulldog, and that the “leader” of the Socs was gone. Pony also knew that there would be a lot of drama following Bob’s death and he just didn't want to deal with it all at once.

Type of Charaecter

TYPE OF CHARACTER - Ponyboy is dynamic, round, and a protagonist. One example of him being dynamic is when he thinks this, “They shouldn’t hate each other...I don’t hate the Socs anymore...they shouldn’t hate…”(122). Ponyboy changes his opinion because he finally understands the reason why the Greasers and the Socs hate each other, and he doesn’t support it. Another example of how he is dynamic is how Pony realizes towards the middle of the book that Darry loves him very much, but at the beginning of the book he thinks the exact opposite. “Darry did care about me, maybe as much he cared about Soda, and because he cared he was trying too hard to make something of me”(84). It took Pony half the book to realize that his own brother loved him. Pony is a round character because he changes his opinion a lot throughout the book, and he has a very complex personality. An example of this is when he has mixed emotions about Johnny’s death. In the back of his mind he knows what happened and he knows that he has to accept it, but on the outside he falls into one of his fantasy realities for a bit too long, pretending that Johnny’s still alive. Pony is the protagonist simply because he is one of the main characters. The story revolves around him.

CONCLUSION OF PERSONALITY TEST RESULTS - The test results said that Pony is high in neuroticism which means it’s easy for him to experience negative emotions including fear, sadness, anxiety, guilt, and shame. I agree with this because when Johnny died, Pony became depressed pretty easily, but he was able to come out of it with the help of his friends and family. The results also said that Pony is imaginative which is 100% correct. He loves novels and movies because it’s a whole other world to experience. He uses his imagination to escape reality very often.
