There is a reason why every person does the things that they do, and finding a moment to take a step back and try to see things from a different perspective allows me to be less defensive and actually listen to what the other person has to say. People's feelings are validated and that is something that I feel is often missed in conversations (especially around topics regarding the "isms").
However, I think it's also important that people hear perspectives that they don't always agree with.
