As a student nurse, I follow Standard 1.3 of the culturally responsive clinical practice framework: Establishing Relationships and Trust with Patients (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2016). Working with Ukrainian refugees has helped me realize how anxiety and disruption can lead to a loss of trust in medical field. I aim to gain people's trust by engaging in pleasing conversation, using experiences interpreters as needed, and remaining patient throughout examinations. Since the conflict may have disrupted the care of many Ukrainians, I will ensure that my efforts are transparent and consistent to promote safety. Upon reflection, I realized how it is crucial and consistent to promote safety. After some thinking, I realize how important it is to flight for the best clinical outcomes while respecting their health views, taking my time, and listening to them without passing judgement.

Social Inclusion and Non-Discrimination as Social Determinant of Health

In Australia, social inclusion has a significant impact on Ukrainian refugees' health. According to World Health Organization, discrimination and exclusion are connected to an expanded frequency of mental soundness disorders and poor health outcomes (World Health Organization, 2025). Ukrainians, particularly those feeling brutality, are more vulnerable to anxiety, despair, and chronic stress because of social isolation, limited employment options, and language barriers(Yaryna Andrushko & Lanza, 2024). Supporting inclusive practices, such as collaborative projects and interpreter availability, promotes a sense of belonging, which is essential for healing and readjusting. Our duty as nurses include assisting fair access and providing culturally safe settings that foster positive identity and relation (Tremblay et al., 2023).

TB Screening Among Ukrainian Refugees:

Tuberculosis (TB), particularly latent TB infection (LTBI), is a common health problem among Ukrainian immigrants due to country's high TB incidence (de Vries et al., 2024). Refugees, nonetheless of symptomatology, must be screened for tuberculosis upon arrival. The Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide recommends interferon-gamma release assays (IGRA) as the preferred approach for diagnosing LTBI. After diagnosis, the risk of developing active TB can be significantly reduced by taking isoniazid for 6-9 months as a preventive measure. As nurses, we must give culturally appropriate education in order to eliminate disgrace, prevent transference, and promote treatment conformity.

Health Belief/ Traditional Medicine

Herbal Remedies in Ukrainian Folk Medicine

Herbal medicine is still an important part of Ukrainian culture, and linden flower, calendula, and chamomile are popular cures for colds, anxiety, and stomach disorders (Ukraine Herbal Solidarity – Solidarity Apothecary, 2025). These traditional therapies may be preferred by many Ukrainian migrants or used in conjunction with Western medicine. Understanding these concepts facilitates more thorough therapy and strengthens nurse-patient connections. For example, a patient using linden tea to treat a fever may be hesitant to take paracetamol. To ensure safe interactions with authorized medications, nurses should inquire about traditional treatments without chasing judgement(Hawkins & Morse, 2022).
