The Stranger Reflection

What I find interesting about the motifs and themes of Albert Camus' work is how it consists of heavy usage of light and eyes as a means to communicate to the audience Meursault's true feelings towards things in the book. It seems that throughout the book, eyes are an indicator of intelligence and ability to connect with each other. Meanwhile, light on the other hand seems to have a drastic shift in connotation from being more negative to being more positive as Meursault develops throughout the novel.

A line of inquiry I'd like to explore in The Stranger is "how does Albert Camus make use of motifs such as eyes, light, color, and weather to explore the different perspectives each individuals have on their worldviews."

Some motifs I found to be interesting within Duffy's works is how a lot of them generally tend to take famous stories - like Sisyphus, Elvis, and the Holocaust. These themes might be interesting to me because of how it gives a new outlook on these events that aren't obvious. For example, Mrs. Sisyphus seems to tackle the perspective of the wife of the supposed "Sisyphus" as a means to show how husbands spend a ton of effort on menial work only for it to come crashing down and forcing them to start over again - showing how the lack of women in working roles in a society could lead to low amounts of productiveness and progress.

Some motifs and themes I genuinely found interesting within An American Child is how the book often had numerous tonal shifts to being somewhat informal as a means to make it feel like a retrospective as well. It gives the book a means to give advice to the viewer while also describing how life is like for Dillard.

A line of inquiry I'd like to explore when it comes to An American Child is "how does Dillard make use of the memoir's linear nature to make a message on maturity and its effects on someone's life?"

I would see myself using 1984 for Paper 2 mainly because of how not only is there a lot of topics to discuss in 1984 even outside of the typical themes of oppression.

Works that would best connect to 1984 that I can use is definitely Days and Memory due to how much it features numerous historical events that can be linked with the fictional events and social/political landscape of 1984 that not only show how much the book aged well, but also how important said themes are.

Murakami Reflection

What I really love in this unit is how bizarre it is compared to most other stories in IB English. Compared to even stuff like Beloved, Murakami is capable of making stories that are significantly more personalized and simultaneously more subtle and unsubtle its symbolism can be due to how more direct yet indirect it is.

While I can't see myself writing some of Murakami's short stories into Paper 2 due to how hard it is to get a more distinct message out of all of them or even the author's intentions other than "his perspective," its certainly a lot more interesting to think about for the possibilities of even using such a text.

Works that are similar to Murakami's work are Beloved and American Childhood. The former is mainly due to its magical realism elements and how they both tell stories using said magical realism to make a point on elements such as family or extremity. Meanwhile the latter is due to how it follows a similar format of disconnected stories which can be the author bringing up numerous important points that need to be addressed.
