The long-term aim of this collaboration is to present the recent history (17th – 21st century) of Greenland environmental change collectively determined from Indigenous narratives, colonial archives and traditional scientific knowledge (salt marsh data) and deliver these histories back to the communities in Greenland from where they originated via non-traditional dissemination routes.

To meet the long-term aim of unifying different but complementary sources of information we propose to undertake a pilot exercise in a single town in southern Greenland (Narsaq) which will consist of in-person listening exercises between UK and Greenlandic partners at the Narsaq International Research Station (NIRS) to (1) Promote current research into historical Greenland environmental changes and scope community involvement (2) Establish a diverse working group to (3) understand the needs and interests of the local community with a view to delivering palaeo-archival information back to the communities from which it originated.

I would like to connect with people who have an interest in translating environmental information from archives from Danish into Greenlandic/English.

The doctoral thesis addresses the pressing challenge of re-grounding environmental and climate upheavals into meaningful local experiences of the world. While investigating globalising narratives around the ecological and climate disaster, I suggest that voices from yonder (non-Western worlds) contain the seed both to express an ontological and epistemological diversity, and to produce a radical critic of the Global. To defy the uniform framing of ongoing upheavals, I ground the analysis with empirical insights from Ittoqqortoormiit (Inuit Nunaat), where long-dwelling and repetitive fieldworks are conducted. The critical ethnographical approach deployed shed lights on unheard and invisibilised stories. I argue that if voices have to be raised, it has to be among local communities, in order for these narratives to perform with respect to the world(s). Hence, the thesis both addresses the climate and environmental crisis as a moment that directly threatens (certain) ways of being in the world, and as a global narrative that potentially pursue a dynamic of marginalisation-invisibilisation of the non-Western worlds. I will be in position to draw alternatives or pluriversal stories that nurture the framing of global changes by decentring the gaze and offering new ontological and epistemological resources to understand multidimensional upheavals. Also, a substantial aspect of the thesis aims to reflect on my privileged research posture, trying to tame a way of being respectfully working with/within/for disempowered communities.

2021-2023

Contact: tanguy.sandre@uvsq.fr

Link: Semper Arctic - Nordregio projects

Affiliation: CEARC, UVSQ, University Paris Saclay

To reveal if changed climate may affect migratory behavior and trophic niche use, we will combine acoustic telemetry, physiological sampling techniques, sampling for stable isotopes (SIA) and genomics to examine charr populations in two neighboring fjord systems in Southwestern Greenland. One of the sites receives influx from glacial runoff whereas the other does not. The aim is to quantify variation in migratory tactics and the extent of marine habitat use of anadromous Arctic charr between the two ecologically very different fjord systems, and link distributions to important environmental variables like temperature, salinity and marine productivity. The current lack of knowledge regarding migratory tendencies makes it impossible for resource managers to ensure that different migratory behaviour types are protected, thus ensuring a portfolio of migration strategies are present within a given river system to deal with impending climate change. Knowledge from sites with limited other anthropogenic impacts will be crucial in providing this understanding.

August-september 2023

Contact: jan.davidsen@ntnu.no

Link:

Isaaffik the arctic gateway

https://knr.gl/kl/nutaarsiassat/ilisimatuut-qaqortup-kangerluani-eqaluit-ingerlaarfiat-misissuiffigilerpaat?overridden_route_name=entity.node.canonical&base_route_name=entity.node.canonical&page_manag

https://norwegianscitechnews.com/2024/01/climate-change-in-greenland-could-cause-trouble-for-arctic-char/

Affiliation: NTNU University museum

The postcolonial linguistic landscape in Kalaallit Nunaat is multilingual. Nevertheless, the semantics of words that have emerged from the contact between Kalaallisut and Danish in Kalaallit Nunaat have rarely been examined under a linguistic microscope.

As living historical artifacts, contact words can tell stories about the contexts in which they were created and of which they are a part.

In 2007, Denmark launched the Programme for Monitoring of the Greenland Ice Sheet (PROMICE) to assess the mass loss of the Greenland ice sheet. The two major contributors to the ice sheet mass loss are surface melt and a larger production of icebergs through faster ice flow. PROMICE focuses on both processes. Ice movement and discharge are tracked by satellites and GPS. The surface mass balance is monitored by a network of weather stations in the melt zone of the ice sheet, providing ground truth data to calibrate mass budget models.

The Greenland Climate Network (GC-Net) was established in 1995 by Prof. Konrad Steffen at CIRES, to obtain knowledge of the mass gain and climatology of the ice sheet. The programme was funded by the USA until 2020, at which point Denmark assumed responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the weather station network. The snowfall and climatology are monitored by a network of weather stations in the accumulation zone of the ice sheet, supplemented by satellite-derived data products.

Together, the two monitoring programmes deliver data about the mass balance of the Greenland ice sheet in near real-time.

April-September 2024

Contact: pho@geus.dk

Affiliation: Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS)

Link: PROMICE - GC-NET / PROMICE | Isaaffik the arctic gateway / Greenland Climate Network | Isaaffik the arctic gateway

ClimateNarratives is an interdisciplinary research project in the climate sciences focusing on identifying risks, vulnerability, innovation and adaption possibilities for indigenous communities living along the coast of Greenland and on low-lying islands of the Pacific. Both of these communities live close to nature and to the ocean, and are facing new challenges and opportunities due to climate change: As the glaciers and the sea ice along the coast of Greenland retreats, new land is appearing and the fjords are opening; meanwhile, on low-lying island states of the Pacific, land is disappearing as the ice melts, and the communities are at an ever increasing risk of storm surges and floods.

What is novel with the ClimateNarratives project is the combination of climate science, social science and art together with local indigenous knowledge and narratives across cultures and generations in the search to identify challenges and possibilities in the face of current and as well as future climate changes.

Open for art and science residencies. My four articles are varied, the first is about how the media has represented the missionary Hans Egede through 50 years (1971-2021). The next article is about how Danmarks Radio an KNR collaborated to start up the national tv in Greenland. The third article focus on how KNR-TV uses their archives in their daily broadcasting and how the viewers think of that. The last article puts the importance in keeping archival material through digitization, in order to maintain the modern history in Greenland to the future.

Contact: avfl@uni.gl

Affiliation: Ilisimatusarfik

Seniors in Their Own Homes - Resources and Local Communities

The project aims to explore the resources and contributions of elderly individuals to their local communities in Greenland. As the elderly population in Greenland grows, it's crucial to establish a welfare system that supports their health in tater years. The research question delves into how the elderly's resources are perceived and experienced, and how they can be integrated into community development and maintenance.
The methodology involves ethnographic fieldwork in the town of Sisimiut and the nearby village of Sarfannguit, focusing on seniors living at home and participating in their daily routines. Addi tionally, semi-structured interviews and sharing circles will be employed to gather data from the elderly, other community groups, and professionals. This data will undergo thematic analysis.
The project's objective is to pinpoint and promote positive elements aiding individuals, local com munities, and organizations to flourish. It also seeks to prevent seniors from feeling marginalized and lonely, as their experiences, knowledge, skilts, and culture are invaluable to society. The pro ject's tindings will be showcased in an exhibition, serving both as a medium for dissemination and an intervention to boost community development.

Contact: Mona.madsen@sammivik.gl

Affiliation: Ilisimatusarfik
