I was astounded that "one-third of America's struggling readers are from college educated families." Explicit early phonics-based instruction is necessary for students to learn how to read. I was taught on how to use SIPPS (phonic based instruction) for middle school students. I wonder if this would be useful?

I find it very interesting that even though there is a lot of science behind how to effectively teach reading, teachers are not being taught how to do it effectively.

Why are preparation programs for teachers not teaching teachers how to explicitly teach reading? I was not taught and makes me question my teaching.
