In the exposition of The Necklace, the main character, Mathilde Loisel is introduced. She is first depicted as a beautiful and charming woman who had constantly complained about her poverty. She has a compulsive need for jewelry and other expensive clothing. Mathilde is married to a clerk, M. Loisel, who remains loyal to her marriage, despite her dissatisfaction with his inability to provide for her. One day, M. Loisel arrives home with an envelope with an invitation to a lavish party. This story takes place in Paris, France, during the 1800's.
