Murphy's Law states the anything that can go wrong, will go wrong, and at the worst possible time. If you plan to get past the obstacles this results in it is imperative to be adaptable. Pausch had to adjust to many situations in his life such as finding out he had terminal cancer. In his novel, The Last Lecture, he further explains that it it imperative to take every lucky chance you get in order to move forward towards your goals. He wanted to see what it was like in zero gravity, and as soon as he found a chance he took it. Each point in the TED talk highlights a different portion of what it means to work hard. This is especially clear from 00:58-01:48 in the video due to the nature of the advice. The tips he gives is from real people who have had very successful careers, so they would know what you must do to be successful. In his memoir, Randy Pausch has an entire section in his novel dedicated to leaving his best bits of advice, all of which involve working. Many of his lessons were from other people, just like Richard St. John's tips. Each visual highlights an important thing to consider along the pathway to success. Randy was able to use his adapting skills to get around any brick walls that came into his way. He was very lucky to get the chances to adapt due to the resources he was born with (his supportive and wise parents). But he defines luck as a result of opportunity and preparation, which means that hard work factors into the equation as well.
