Elie has been faced with a few examples of father and son relationships throughout his time going through the holocaust. The first one is about Rabbi and his son. During the march to Gleiwitz, Rabbi's son was given the chance to abandon his father because of the burden that was provided for him that limited their chances at survival. Rabbi was sick and weak and the son realized that if he abandoned him to die, he won't have to carry the burden his father provided because of the substantial care that was needed for the father to survive this. The son left his father and the father unfortunately was killed on the march. Throughout these relationships Elie takes notice on what the sons do to their fathers and even thinks about doing the evil deed to his own father for survivability.

Another example of a father son relationship that was observed by Elie was between Meir and his father. The father was shown to be on the brink of death because of starvation and Meir was able to find some bread. Meir was given the choice of consuming the food for himself or splitting it with his father. If he ate all the food for himself he would ensure a higher survivability rate for himself but if split with his father, both would survive but would need more food to survive. Meir in the end consumed the food for himself and left his father to die of starvation. Soon after Meir was caught consuming the bread and was killed by the Nazis. This relationship also tempted for Elie to abandon his father because of the sickness that was bestowed upon him and would really help Elie's situation to survive.

An additional father son relationship that was present in the novel was between Meir Katz and his son. Meir was known to be the most tough and physically strong hostage that Elie and his father knew. Meir was an old friend of Elie's father and was known to help with manual labor and strong objects. Through the separations being conducted by the Nazis, Meir was split from his son and had to live life without him throughout the holocaust. One day Meir broke down and began to sob because he was afraid of what happened to his son and dearly missed him. In the end Meir stayed with the dead corpses in the car and died.

One last relationship that Eliezer faced in his journey was of himself and his father. In the beginning of the novel, it was stated that Elie and his father were never really close. His father was never very open around his family about his feelings and was mostly outside the house helping other people. Throughout the journey, Elie can see the bonding that has been taken place between him and his father. Elie's father was shown to say that he wished Elie would have gone with his mother because he didn't want to see his son suffer and die from the burning fire. Elie also witnessed his father cry for the first time in his life. Other examples of bonding being shown throughout the novel was seeing each other being tortured, Elie helping his father throughout his father's sickness, giving his father rations of food even though the food was made him sick and he keep it to himself to ensure his safety but did it because his father asked him to and even seeing his father face his inevitable death which changed Elie's life forever. In the end, Elie had to make the tough choice to abandon his father to help with his survival which drastically changed how Elie would face life after the holocaust.

An ironic thing that was present in the novel was the switch of the father and son role between Elie and his father. In the beginning of the novel it was obvious that Elie's father was the one protecting him and giving advice to help them through this chaos. Throughout the book however, the roles began to take a turn when Elie was shown to be the protector while his father was in need of protecting and was ensured when the father was diagnosed with a deadly sickness and Elie was the one looking for him and helping him.

In the end, it was shown throughout "Night" that the strength and bond between a father and son is powerful and can overcome the toughest obstacles that are present in life. From Eliezer and his father being distant from each other to Elie becoming the more father-like figure and witnessing his death. This relationship was truly the thing that guided Eliezer through the holocaust and aided in his survival.
