1. Change 1 Thing

I love the story Ghost Boys provides. If I were to change 1 thing I would have there be more charter development for his family members. His sister and grandma are in this book quite a lot, but the mom and dad are not. I think developing these two characters would add more depth to the book and make Jerome's death more emotional.

Alone - Jerome is bullied and treated wrong the whole story and that's enough to make somebody feel alone.

Small - They talk about how Jerome is short and skinny when they are in the courtroom.

Empty - Jerome, "In the courthouse, I feel clammy and cold. Not weather cold, just empty cold."

Oppressed - While they are in court people shout out things like "Black lives matter." and "Jerome mattered." These words usually stand for less black oppression in the world.

Outcasted - In the book jerome talks about how he gave up on friends in 5th grade.

My favorite part is when Jerome and Sarah are in the library and the librarian shows Sarah the picture of Emmett Till. The feeling after she was shown the pictures felt real to me. Jerome says "I hear Sarah sobbing "oh, oh, oh" over and over and over." I love this part because you can feel emotion and concern in Sarah's voice.

Many teens can relate to when Jerome and Carlos are in the bathroom stalls. They are hiding so they don't get hurt. This could definitely relate to people being bullied. The feeling of being chased and hunted as you try to escape the bullies.

I give this book a 4.5 out of 5 star ratings. I gave it this because I think it gripped modern-day issues we have today. In doing so it also puts together a fiction about ghosts and past victims of police brutality. I think this book develops characters well and tells a great story.

My important passage is when Carlos and Jerome are getting beat up and Carlos pulls a gun. This is important because the gun ends up being a toy. Eventually that toy gun results in Jerome's death. He gets hold of the toy and it is mistaken as a real gun so the police shoot him.

Personally I think it is horrible that Jeome got shot without warning. I also think it was irresponsible to carry a toy gun around in public. Sadly this has to do with race. You have to be careful with all the things that have happened with police officers and black people. This isn't fair, but it is the current situation. I hope the situation will get fixed.

I think in this book modern day society has the power. How the police system is run these days is the real power in this book. How justice is not brought to these victims really controls the book. This is also what themes the book focuses on.
