There are three pre-session activities to complete before the session on Thu 9 Sep. All posts are anonymous. Completing the activities should take no longer than 45 minutes:

1. What is the scope of clinical phonetics?

To answer this question, browse the chapter headings in Ball (2021). Post the one that you find particularly interesting and say why. You can access the e-book from the Library using this link:

https://mmu.on.worldcat.org:443/list/18035518

2. Access the RCSLT Curriculum Guidance (2021)
Familiarise yourself with the content and knowledge base for phonetics and its clinical applications in the Table on page 61.

Reflect on your upcoming placement. What do you already know about phonetics that you will be able to apply? Post one idea together with a note of the client-group you will be working with.

You can access the guidance using this link:

RCSLT Curriculum Guidance for the pre-registration education of speech and language therapists

3. Consider the following three words: tart / dart / cart. How might your current knowledge about phonetics allow you to compare and contrast different (possibly atypical) productions of these words?
To answer this question, you could start by thinking about the ways in which you have learnt to represent speech using different kinds of phonetic transcription. Next, you could revisit some of the topics that have been covered in phonetics so far this year. Consider the words spoken in isolation and in sentences. Post one or two brief ideas.
