She never could read until she met Mr. Falker. He helped her overcome her reading disability and helped her believe in herself. This book is moderately complex with the use of its vocabulary and some compound sentences. The organization would also be considered moderately complex because she talks about being at home and then also at school and having to move schools. This would be a great read-aloud book and maybe even a writing prompt and have students talk about how they learned to read.
3.RL.KID.1. A little girl named Maria helps her mother make tamales for the meal. When her mother leaves the kitchen Maria gets her mother's ring and tries it on. She looks down later on in the story and the ring is missing. She panics and thinks it landed in one of the tamales as they were making them. She and her cousins eat all of the tamales and it turns out her mother had the ring on her finger all along. This book could also be used during a reading lesson and the students could talk about what they have with their Christmas meal or a time when they were tempted to not tell the truth. The text complexity is moderately complex to very complex. The vocabulary could be a bit confusing for the younger children.
4.RL.KID.3 Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing specific details in a text, such as character's thoughts, words, or actions.

The quiet cricket meets several insects throughout the book and he rubs his wings together each time he meets someone new and nothing happens, not even a sound. He never makes a sound until one day he meets a female cricket and he finally makes a sound. The text complexity for this book would be between slightly complex and moderately complex. The vocabulary is fairly simple but there are some compound sentences. This book would be a good book to introduce a science lesson that might be about insects or the sounds that animals make to attract others.
3.RL.KID.1.
