After the Reformation, England was in the midst of a fierce Protestant and Catholic conflict. When James I came to the throne, he declared that he wanted to uphold "religious tolerance" and hoped to calm tensions through a series of religious policies. However, although James I had maintained a degree of reconciliation with Catholics, his accession did not eliminate the deep rift between Protestantism and Catholicism, and instead intensified the antagonism between the two.

James I's lineage and religious stance not only influenced the tactics of his rule, but also profoundly influenced the religious history of England and Scotland, becoming an important symbol of religious conflict in the 17th century. His reign set the stage for the later conflict between Protestants and Catholics, and also provided the background for the gradual advance of religious tolerance in England.

The Protestant Reformation played a significant role in the witch hunts. As Protestantism spread throughout Europe, it rejected many Catholic practices, including the veneration of saints. This religious tension heightened the fear of witches, who were often associated with the “old religion”.

In rural Scotland, folklore and ancient pagan rituals are intertwined with Christian beliefs. People believe that certain people have the ability to heal, exorcise or cast spells, and these "witchcraft" are often associated with nature and mystical forces. Many of those accused of being witches actually used herbs to cure diseases or participated in ancient harvest sacrifices. However, under the influence of the Protestant Reformation and religious fanaticism, these acts came to be seen as evidence of a pact with the devil, leading to the trial and execution of innocent people. These folktales reveal the complex relationship between faith and culture.

James I's support for the arts and literature contributed to the flourishing of drama, poetry and philosophy. Shakespeare's plays found great support at his court, and the Shakespeare Company (later the Royal Shakespeare Company) was named The King's Men under the aegis of James I. James I was not only a patron of literature, but also had a profound influence on the creation of literary and artistic works, and promoted the glory of English culture in the late Renaissance.
