Some firefighters, called smokejumpers, parachute into hard-to-reach areas where they can extinguish small fires before they spread. Jumpers in the military, called paratroopers, might parachute into a region to remain undetected. 

Other people do it just for fun. Falling speed increases until the parachutist reaches terminal velocity (maximum speed with no further acceleration). With belly down and arms and legs out, terminal velocity for a skydiver is about 120 mph. Skydivers can increase their speed by falling head first with their arms and legs pulled in, and they can decrease their speed by wearing wing suits. This control is what allows them to join together in formations.

Solo skydivers may jump from approximately 12,000 ft, but skydivers wanting to make a formation start higher.
