The nurse is a comic relief in the play. She had once had a daughter, however her daughter died and she became the nurse of Juliet. She loves Juliet and wants what's best for her. She is more of a mother figure to Juliet than Juliet's own mother. Her character experiences excitement at the thought of Juliet marrying, but a little shock at finding that Juliet has interest in Romeo Montague, part of the family feuding with her own.

When the nurse comes into the play she immediately shows that she wants what is best for Juliet. We can tell that she and Juliet have a tight bond and that Juliet would be more open with the nurse than with her mother. And that the nurse would be more open minded than Juliet's mother.

Hearing Lady Capulet tell Juliet that she was a mother at Juliet's age and that she thinks it is time that Juliet should wed, makes the nurse excited. She says, "Peace, I have done. God mark thee to his grace! Thou wast the prettiest babe that e'er I nursed. An I might live to see thee married once. I have my wish."(1.3.60-63). Then Lady Capulet asks Juliet how she would feel about marrying. Juliet responds by saying it's something she hasn't thought about. Lady Capulet asks how she would feel about marrying the perfect, rich, "valiant Paris". And the nurse understanding how perfect he would be for Juliet responds with, "A man, young lady! lady, such a man As all the world-why he's a man of wax."(1.3.76-77). Or in other words, he is a man so perfect he could be a wax statue, one used as the type sculptors used as models for their work. We can infer that through Lady Capulet's persuasion and the Nurses excitement and plead that Juliet decides to agree to see Paris. "I'll look to like, but if looking liking more, But no more deep will I end art mine eye Than your consent gives strength to make it fly." (1.3.98-100) Seeing the nurses excitement, Juliet wouldn't want to let the nurse down.

Neither of them knowing the others true identity, they share two kisses. When the nurse interrupts Romeo and Juliet to tell Juliet her mother needs a word, Romeo asks who Juliet's mother may be and when the nurse tells Romeo "Her mother is the lady of the house."(1.5.112), Romeo is shocked along with the nurse whom thought that Juliet would be with Paris and not with someone form her family's oldest enemies.

Shock Leads to Others Feeling Shocked

Once the nurse reveals Juliet's identity to Romeo he reveals his identity to the nurse saying, "Is she a Capulet? O dear account! My life is my foe's debt." (1.5.116-117). So when Romeo basically gives his identity away to the nurse he is shock and then she becomes shocked to learn who he is. Now the nurse knows that Juliet could be interested in Romeo and nurse is going to have suspicions. Her knowledge of Romeos identity leads her to be wary of telling Juliet who he is. Juliet keeps trying to ask who that is and the nurse responds by saying someone else and finally when she comes to Romeo the nurse says she doesn't know who he is but as soon as Juliet says, "Go ask his name.--If he be married, My grave is like to be my wedding bed."(1.5.132-133), the nurse immediately responds with, "His name is Romeo, and a Montague, The only son of your great enemy."(1.5.134-135). Thinking perhaps if Juliet is going to know who he is she should know he's the family enemy and therefore perhaps Juliet won't fall for him. Juliet in return says, "My only love, sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too late! Prodigious birth of love it is to me That I must love a loathed enemy."(1.5.136-139). Or in other words Juliet is basically saying that she has fallen in love with him before she even knew his name.

Due to the nurses distrust and Juliet's curiosity, the nurse goes to speak to Romeo to see if he truly means how he says he feels about Juliet. Romeo tells the nurse that he and Juliet are to be wed. The nurse has a good conversation with Romeo, however she is still not completely sure how Juliet could want him so when she returns, out of breath, she tells Juliet, "Well, you have made a simple choice; you know not how to choose a man. Romeo? No, not he. Though his face be better than any man's, yet his leg excels all men's; and for a hand and a foot, and a body, though they be not to be talked on, yet they are past compare. He is not the flower of courtesy, but, I'll warrant him, as gentle as a lamb..." (2.5.38-43). This running around also takes a toll on the nurse because it makes her tired. When she returns from talking with Romeo she begins to tell Juliet that perhaps this Romeo is a gentleman but trying to change the subject she asks Juliet where her mother is. In return Juliet replies with, "Where is my mother? Why, she is within. Where should she be? How oddly thou repliest! "'Your love says, like an honest gentleman, 'Where is your mother?'"' (2.5.57-60). And the nurse tired and unsure of all that is happening replies to Juliet, "O God's Lady dear! Are you so hot? Marry come up, I trow. Is this the poultice for my aching bones? Hence forward do your messages yourself." (2.5.61-64).As we can tell Juliet is anxious to know what Romeo said. Going back a little to what Romeo and the Nurse talked about we can conclude Romeo is in love with Juliet and wants to marry her and the nurse isn't too sure about it yet she knows Juliet would be unhappy with Paris. As they are talking Nurse says, "I will tell her, sir, that you do protest, which, as I take it, is a gentlemanlike offer." Romeo says, "Bid her devise Some means to come to shrift this afternoon; And there she shall at Friar Laurence' cell Be shrived and married. Here is for they pains."(2.4.153-158). Nurse replies, "This afternoon, sir? Well, she shall be there." Then the Nurse thinking more about all that Romeo is saying says, "Well, sir, my mistress is the sweetest lady. Lord, Lord! when 'twas a little prating thing--O, there is a nobleman in town, one Paris, that would fain lay knife aboard; but she, good soul, had as lief see a toad, a very toad, as see him."(2.4.174-177). Therefore the nurse is saying that Juliet would rather look at a toad than to see Paris.

The motherhood poem relates to the nurse because Juliet goes to the nurse for help and the nurse being Juliet's mother figure isn't sure if she is doing the right thing by helping her with Romeo, but knows it's what's best for it's what makes Juliet happy. Plus, the nurse is putting Juliet's happiness before her health. This relates to Juliet because perhaps with all that is happening she will learn a lesson from the nurse.

The nurse stands up for Juliet from her father when he goes a little harsh on her. Juliet is asking her father to hear her out and he yells at her saying, "Hang thee, young baggage! disobedient wretch! I tell thee what--get thee to church a Thursday Or never after look me in the face. Speak not, reply not, do not answer me! My fingers itch. (I want to hit you) Wife, we scarce thought us blest That god had lent us but this only child; But now I see this one is one too much, And that we have a curse in having her. Out on her, hilding!"(3.5.160-168). Then the nurse stands up for Juliet and tells Capulet that he is to blame (3.5.168-169) And Capulet disrespects the nurse. However, later on the nurse admits to Juliet that she thinks she had better marry Paris: "Romeo is banish'd; and all the world to nothing That he dares ne'er come back to challenge you; Or if he do, it needs must be by stealth. Then, since the case so stands as now it doth, I think it best you married with the County."(3.5.214-218). So basically the nurse tells Juliet that Romeo is no good to her now and that Paris is a "lovely gentleman" and that the new marriage would be better than the first, which is as good as over. Juliet doesn't take this well and feels almost btrayed by the nurse. Telling the nurse she won't tell her any more of her secrets she says, "I'll to friar to know his remedy. If all else fail, myself have power to die."(3.5.242-243).

Emotions of the characters lead them to take the actions that they take. For instance, the nurse was happy and was there for Juliet but then Juliet said harsh words to the nurse when she didn't get her way, even after the nurse had stood up for Juliet. Therefore the nurses emotions hadn't ever really changed for Juliet; she just wanted what was best for her. The greatest consequence for the nurses actions was when she lost Juliet's trust. The lesson that we the audience can take away from this is that we should try to make people happy but also do what's best for them even if we have to tell them something they don't want to hear.
