Diabetes
Moderate risk
My paternal grandfather has suffered from diabetes type two for many years. Many of his family members, including brothers, sisters, and cousins all suffer from type two diabetes.

PREVENTION:
Maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle in general. Exercise regularly. If I for some reason do end up with type two diabetes, I will make sure I take care of myself. One of my grandfather's downfalls is he does not take care of himself and manage his diabetes like he should.

Breast cancer
Mild risk
My paternal aunt had breast cancer at the age of 37. She underwent chemo and radiation and ultimately ended up getting a unilateral mastectomy to cure the cancer. She does NOT have the BRCA gene so the fact that she got breast cancer was kind of like dumb luck.

PREVENTION:
Start getting routine mammograms at the age of 35. Perform routine self breast exams and see a doctor if there are any concerns. I was told by my physician that I do NOT have to have genetic testing because my aunt did NOT have the BRCA gene.

Alzheimer's Disease
Moderate to high risk
My maternal grandmother had Alzheimer's disease for over ten years before she finally passed in 2011. I consider myself to have a moderate risk to get the disease. Now, if my own mother gets it, I would have a much higher risk of getting it. But I won't know that for quite a few years yet.

PREVENTION:
Unfortunately, there is no clear-cut way to prevent Alzheimer's disease. There is some research to suggest that heart health and Alzheimer's disease have some sort of correlation. Therefore, maintaining good heart health could be an unconscious way to prevention Alzheimer's disease.

Uterine cancer
Moderate to high risk
My paternal grandmother was diagnosed with uterine cancer at the age of 62. She died around six months after her diagnosis. She had a hysterectomy and when she did the cancer spilled out into her abdomen and just took over. I consider myself at moderate to high risk because research shows that if someone in your family has had uterine cancer, you are twice as likely to get it.

PREVENTION:
Be sure to have yearly GYN appointments and exams. If there comes a time that I want to have a hysterectomy, I will ensure I have a uterine biopsy done beforehand to ensure I do NOT have cancer before they remove my uterus.
