4. Our students have to develop advanced literacy skills in order to be successful in school, at work, or even in life. Digital literacy has become a requirement in order to obtain a majority of the most rewarding employment opportunities. 2) Things are very technical, reading has become an expectation. There is more stuff on the internet that is "not true." Students need to be able to differentiate between good and bad information. Literacy is needed in every field
3) Internet is a new thing, most of us definitely didn't have a 1:1 advantage, reading material came from print sources, there are more materials to cite, "Keyboarding" is no longer a class
4) If they are not, they will be left behind. Literacy is in every job. It's tied to critical thinking--in order to function, they need to be able to understand everything they hear/see. 2. Need deeper level to grasp understanding, interpret tones, provide trouble-shooting and problem-solving. World is more communication based with availability of resources on internet. We have fewer blue collar jobs so higher-level jobs are more prevalent. We have a higher level of competition globally for jobs.
3. More resources are available at our fingertips. We have to prepare students as digital users and citizens. 
4. They have access to so much content. It is a different capacity though, so we aren't sure how to compare to history. 
2. There is no option to not read. You need to read for basic functions such as applying for any job. 
3. Use to be a lot of memorization. Students can't "fake it" anymore. Critical thinking is now a major component of reading.
