Topic: Contextualising the hopes and concerns for AI
Description: This session begins to describe what the term AI has been used to encompass and how this shapes its application.  As an introductory session, the intention is to highlight how the term is multifaceted and to establish a baseline for how students in this course can approach AI more generally and in relation to their own discipline. Rather than narrowly defining what AI is, the focus will be on the different terminology that is used and how contexts shape not only the understanding of users and developers, but those that are subject to AI decisions or actions.

Description: AI-enabled technologies, such as online hiring systems to assess job candidates, regularly become subject of heated public debates. When it is revealed that, for instance, a hiring system prioritises male candidates, it rightly evokes concerns about if and how AI challenges central democratic values such as equality of opportunity. Therefore, citizens, policy makers and academics are working to make sure that AI-enabled technologies are ‘fair’. But what do we mean by fairness? Can these issues be solved through technology? And who gets to join the discussion on what counts as fair? In this lecture we will ‘unpack fairness’ relation to AI by discussing different theoretical and social justice approaches.
