She was in a perpetual state of dissatisfaction, because she felt that luxuries and soft living were her natural birthright. The furnished flat in which she had to live, its squalid wallpapers, its shabby chairs, its hideous curtains and upholstery, were a constant source of torment to her. These things, which another woman with a background similar to her own might not have even noticed, she found unendurable and degrading. The sight of the girl who did the humble domestic chores filled her with hopeless longings and idle dreams. She conjured up a vision of hushed entrance halls, hung with oriental fabrics and lit by bronze sconces, of tall footmen in knee-breeches dozing in deep armchairs in the drowsy warmth of a great stove. She dwelt in imagination on vast salons adorned with antique silks, on elegant tables littered with priceless knick-knacks, on perfumed boudoirs where she would sit in the late afternoons, chatting with intimate friends - men well known and sought after, such as every woman wants to have dancing attendance on her.

Sconce: wall bracket for candles; Salon: a large room; Boudoir: bedr

<del>The writer begins by describing luxuries as her ‘natural birthright’. The adjective ‘natural’ shows how privileged she has been her entire life and how ungrateful she is of it. This makes the readers understand her character and background better.</del>

<del>The writer then goes on to describe her fully ‘furnished flat’ in which she had to live. This is an alliteration that proves that even though she doesn’t appreciate it she does have a lot more that many people. The way the writer described the flat as ‘unendurable/degrading’ to her even after it coming with furniture and accommodations further proves her unappreciativeness and shows how spoiled she is.

</del>The overall effect of the paragraph describes the characters' estrangement towards the life she was born into and her ambitions of a lavish and prosperous life. The writer begins by describing luxuries as her ‘natural birthright’. This phrase shows that to her, her existence was an error of destiny. This gives the impression that she had high expectations and aspirations from life and felt that she was born for the luxuries of the world. The writer then goes on to describe her fully ‘furnished flat’ using an alliteration. This proves that even though she isn't completely underprivileged, she had high aspirations from life and felt like she didn't belong. Lastly, the use of rule of three using negative adjectives to describe the flat's furniture as ‘squalid’, ‘shabby’ and ‘hideous’ further emphasize her mental suffering and discontentment from life making the reader feel sympathetic towards her.
