The cousins help us understand who the "coyotes" really are and how they are advising the mother and daughter so they could be successful on their journey. Another character that helps us understand better is the dog. The possibility of rape or even death could happen if she were to go to follow anyone else. Garcia starts both poems off by describing she's getting ready to set off on her journey. In the second poem she's running off without her mother, this adds perspective because in the first poem we don't read much about the mother because it solely focused on how the daughter is preparing. It also shows us the complications that may lie ahead of herself such as finding the right people for help, fear of getting caught or raped etc. Garcia then brings in the mother's perspective to show us how she's preparing herself to let go of child so she may not have to suffer in the village and could go on and enjoy her life.
