To start off the characters besides mother and daughter are the cousins of the daughter and the people of the village. The cousins help us understand who the "coyotes" really are and how they are advising the mother and daughter so they could be successful on their journey. Another character that helps us understand better is the dog. The daughter sees the dog as "competition" but what the dog is doing is that it's preparing her to outrun the coyotes.

The bandana colors signifies who the daughter can rely on her dangerous journey. Garcia exemplifies that the coyotes wearing the yellow band are the people from her region who can only be trusted. Also Garcia discloses that if the daughter were not to go with her designated color, many factors can go wrong down the road. The possibility of rape or even death could happen if she were to go to follow anyone else. If she were to not see the yellow coyotes, she was told to wait or she can go on but again it would be dangerous for her to.

Both poems start off by the daughter running. Garcia starts both poems off by describing she's getting ready to set off on her journey. In the second poem she's running off without her mother, this adds perspective because in the first poem we don't read much about the mother because it solely focused on how the daughter is preparing. In the second poem we read about the mother about how she wants her daughter to grasp onto her opportunity to a better life.

The daughter hypothetical scenario shows us how fierce she is to travel and go on her journey regardless of the complications that could happen. The mother is too brave and accepting for her to let go of her daughter so she could have a better shot in life. Both mother and daughter don't know what lies ahead of them but they don't lose faith and keep hoping for the best.

The daughter's perspective comes before the mother's because it shows us how the daughter is preparing herself for the dangers journey ahead of herself. It also shows us the complications that may lie ahead of herself such as finding the right people for help, fear of getting caught or raped etc. Garcia then brings in the mother's perspective to show us how she's preparing herself to let go of child so she may not have to suffer in the village and could go on and enjoy her life. Garcia also don't just come out and say that the mother will miss the daughter, Garcia put it in a way so that you could read between the lines and make a deeper connection to the writing.
