"Create Seventh Generation thinking" - Boy, does this speak to me. In education, we often make decisions based on finances now rather than how our decisions will impact future generations (think seven generations from now). Morale, credibility. Hard to buy those back.

Knowing the students we actually serve and soliciting their input in content, norms, delivery and product. This first requires inquiry. Additionally, it requires the necessary time for relationship and trust building. Class size plays a huge role here. Willingness as educators (everyone working in education) to customize and the space to develop educational experiences that allow students to be who they are and to share their unique gifts in their own voice and symbolism has to be the goal if we are to subvert the dominant paradigm. I am not advocating for anarchy and self absorption. I do advocate for inclusion of all stakeholders hands in the process of educating from the establishment of norms to the assessment of success.

Whatever our job title may be - 1st grade teacher, counselor, metal shop teacher, bus driver, etc., we need to figure out how to put equity into practice in our work. As an institution our emphasis is often on measurable things like test scores, and we often value things like supposed college readiness over other things because our thinking comes from a certain place of privilege. We have many students who are wonderful people and have wonderful skills that as an institution we are blind to. Students may possess certain types of intelligence that aren't valued in our institution. This happens with students who are non-white, low-income, neuro-atypical, LGBTQ+, etc. We get this laser focus on something that may not be that important for that student - e.g. "This student's math scores are low."

Does gathering input without really being transparent about the input and how it is considered help? It's paternalistic, even if the decisions made further the goal of equity. Transparency and making a decision that goes against the will of the constituents can still be important if equity can be shared and explained and if trust exists. This is where we consistently drop the ball in NKSD and in education as a whole. We simply 'know best'.

Creative Flair and student "voice" -the creative process are things that are developed outside of grades. Funny, I had to sign in to be able to write, I find that doesn't seem very anonymous.

My antidote is to know when to go slow and stop assigning so many assignments. But, then...how do I answer to parents that tell me I'm not doing enough to challenge their child? Our current school system has too many students to teacher/counselor/librarian/para educators/office help ratio. I wonder if this new remote come back to school A B schedules might be something to consider as a plan for always...of course, this is said without experiencing it yet...so I might back peddle on this particular statement.

I feel like we have to have that in special education, because we are accountable to our students and their learning, but we shouldn't let the entire focus be on measurable progress. Students make progress in SO many ways, and we should remember to celebrate and foster those successes just as much as the stuff we can measure.
I responded to the idea that we need to let go of the sense that there is only one right way to do things, especially in a school setting.

I think that this is a larger societal problem that also shows up in schools. We want students (and adults) to be more well rounded individuals with a sense of connection to community and place, but we are in our schools and workplaces five days a week (pre-Covid). By the time the weekend hits, many are exhausted and need to catch up on home life chores, etc. The following week, the treadmill starts again. If we want to help students become well rounded citizens, we need to get them out into the world and make connections with the community. There is a sense that there is never enough time to do so, but we now have an opportunity to reevaluate our priorities. Is it best for all students to attend class inside a school building five days a week? What about developing hybrid programs that spend part of the time in the classroom and part of the time involved in supervised activities in nature, working with the tribes, exploring income inequality by walking the streets of Seattle? We have an opportunity to refocus on developing a school system that allows students to not just look down at their textbooks and screens, but to also look up and explore the wild world around them.

Quantity Over Quality• all resources of organization are directed toward producing measurable goals: We can all use Bettina Love's CRT (Crtical Race Theory) as a tool to expose hidden systemic and customary ways racism works within NKSD. CRT has many offshoots so we can analyze how racism functions in relation to socio-economics, Latinx issues, Asian issues, Native American issues, Feminist issues, Disability issues, even White CRT. We all have Objectivity issues we need to consider as we work to combat racism.

I feel like some of the underlying problems with some of our institutions is that we value the sanctity of the institution, its needs and success, over individuals. Individuals that form the lifeblood of the institution and individuals who are served by the institution often seem to be lower on the priority list. I believe that we are long past the need to deconstruct our varied institutions/institutional systems and reconstruct them around the people being served and doing the service. Education is just one of those long standing institutions that could benefit from a bit, or more, of reconstruction. Perhaps our current efforts to survive through pandemic will open pathways to better thrive with some reformed ideas and processes?

"those with power think they are capable of making decisions for and in the interests of those without power." It's difficult to make those decisions when they have not walked in our shoes. Saying that "ultimately I have the final say" is slap to the face of their constituents. Ultimately our voices are not being heard, especially when the decision is the complete opposite of what the constituents wanted. This is important for "those in power" to hear and understand. Are you really hearing your constituents or are you trying to save face?

Now is the time to move away from "school as it always has been" and create a new brand of school. Why are we teaching kids to become white collar workers? Why is it so wrong to train for blue collar jobs? Create schools for brands that kids want to train for and we won't have a need for district boundaries. Example- NK - STEAM focus, KHS - Liberal Arts, Turn Briadelbik (omg spelling) into a Trade School.

The demand for testing as the end-all, be-all for determining student success is indicative of an educational system that is sorely outdated -- structured on models of work and operation from the Industrial Era, the educational system today, in my estimation, still treats students like the initial industrial capitalists treated their workers before gov't regulation stepped in to protect the workers. Students are not "cogs" in a machine to be pushed through the educational system assembly-line style and yet that is what our country, as a whole, with public education, continues to do. It does an incredibly huge disservice to the HEARTS and minds of our students and communities. The system needs to be completely rethought and rebuilt.

Paternalism: Not actively seeking to include and consider the values and concerns of students, the community, and/or teacher when making decision on school policies. Making decision based on money versus what is best for all.
Historically, I have decided on students’ goals and how to work on them and shared with the team and gotten feedback then. However, feedback was limited in this manner. More recently, I have been making an intentional effort to ask teachers and parents for their involvement in writing goals before meetings, collaborate in developing ways to complete homework at home, and including my students in determining what words to practice, books to read, and activities they want to engage in therapy to make it meaningful for them.

For example, we value eye contact and "outgoing participators" in class, or on Zoom, when there are many quieter, shyer leaders who are not comfortable being on camera but are participating in the chat or in other ways. Some cultures value lowered eye contact as a sign of respect. So we may be unconsciously thinking the quieter/off camera students do not care about school, when they do. They are showing up; so they care.
