What is Radical and What is a Radical Artist?

Radical is the belief that there needs to be a social or political change within a scenario. The idea that there needs to be some kind of dramatic change within the chosen area.

Whereas, a radical artist slightly differs from the initial meaning as artists convey topics that might be deemed as controversial or confrontational or even sometimes provocative into their works. The aim that a radical artist is looking for is to make the audience informed about things going on in society or controversial topic that might not be spoken about in their day to day life. Radical Artists are in some ways opening up doors in the audiences minds to make them think in other ways that they maybe never thought about to begin with. Radical Artists use a lot of imagery during their works to get across the controversial or confrontational messages to an audience. The entire meaning of a radical artist is to divert from the normality and tackle problems through art.

Linking back to the original definition of the meaning radical, a radical artist uses the idea that there needs to be a political and social change and uses it to their advantage to create a piece of art.

But, a radical dancer steers away from the normality of what dance is and explores ideas of what can be created when you are thinking radically instead of being literal.

For example, Pina Bausch steered away from the ballet dance style and created her own version of dance that might have been deemed as controversial at the time but ultimately hers. Bausch broke away from the normality of just one style and decided to fuse them together and focus on the style that is known today as modern dance. She is deemed a radical artist as she focused outside of the box and created work that she believed would change everybody's view on confrontational or controversial subjects.

This research correlates extremely well to Pina Bausch becoming the Radical artist that she is known as today as due to her growing up during the aftermath of the First World War, her work like 'Cafe Muller' for example touches on subjects human emotions that would of been seen as radical during that time period as the publics emotions were never spoken about during that time as men were the sole focus of the time as the war had just blown over and there was still tension in the air. The public would of deemed Bausch as radical for her work as she touched on emotions and conditions that would not of been shown or talked about directly in natural conversation.

As of today, Pina Bausch is still portrayed as a Radical artist as she broke away for the ballet style and decided to create a form of dance that would be shown as different from the structure that ballet is as an art form.

This research of the historical aspect of what was going on during Pina Bausch's time and her experiences really expresses how she became the radical artist that she is known as today. Her being a radical artist is communicated by the way that she was brought up with all of the controversial questions that were lingering in the air after the First World War. Due to these outlooks of everything after the aftermath, Bausch decided to adapt of this and change everything that she thought that performance and dance was. This is shown through her work and directing as she decided to allow the company that she co-directed to be multicultural with performers from all over the would with all different experiences and nationalities.

This would of been deemed as radical as she decided to show the public something that they have never seen before and broaden their outlook into what can become of not only the dance industry but the public too.

This social impact research expresses how Pina Bausch became a radical artist in the dance industry by showing how Bausch decide that she wanted to break away from the normality of one dance style and combine them into a style that is now known today as modern dance. The choreography that she had created gave an outlook into not only her feelings but her dancers emotions and feelings too. By breaking away from the structured style of Ballet it deemed her as radical from that point as pulling away from the normality of something would have caused backlash. This would have faced backlash as she decided to change a dance style that the people were already familiar with and created something that would be questioned.

For example, the feminism movement was a huge radical thing during the 1970s and 80s which inspired Bausch's work. Her radical behaviour is shown through her work as she shown her opinions by exploring the equality between men and women. Bausch focusing on issues like equality, it will have caused people to have a lot of opinions on the matter.

Bausch's outlook is deemed as radical during this as her focus on violence and equality between men an women will have made the public have a lot of radical opinions on what she was doing.

This would be viewed as her being a radical artist as she faced judgements of what she was expressing in her work by the public.

Especially during the time of the critics having judgemental options of women in the performing arts industry Bausch faced a lot of backlash.

Nowadays, Bausch's work is still deemed as radical but is also used as an inspiration.

This YouTube video gave me a lot of insight into not only the technicality of Pina Bausch's choreography but also how radical her work is as a lot of the movements that are happening during this are extremely controversial and sometimes innapropriate but extremely fascinating.

The reason that I believe this piece of choreography is facinating is that I like that fact that Bausch is tackling issues that would of been seen as radical during her time. This reconstructed work modernised her choreography whilst still focusing on the key elements that make Bausch's choreography hers.

Overall, I believe that Pina Bausch is definitely a radical artist as she focused on controversial messages and meanings that made an impact within society. By expressing these meanings I believe that the dance industry wouldn't be where it is as of today as Bausch Brought a new outlook to the public of what dance actually is and the fact you do not have to confine yourself to the normality of one dance style and instead just fuse them all.

By bausch being this radical artist, the dance industry would not have evolved and choreographers and dancers would not be thinking as radically as they should be.

This research allowed be to learn valuable insights in Pina Bausch work and techniques which I will be fusing with own style as she focuses on methods like improvisation to create a base. Bausch is a radical artist and changed the dance industry with her inspiring work.
