Dystopian Protagonist:

In what ways has your protagonist changed and evolved?

Tess became smarter. She got better at putting two and two together. She also got better at getting her way and persuading people. At the beginning, Tess didn't even know what Ivy's job was. Now she knows everything about everybody. Tess always tried to persuade Ivy to let her investigate, but she wasn't successful. Now, if Tess wants something, she gets it.
Page 341- "I racked my mind for everything I'd overheard William Keyes say in his conversation with Adam. He wants Adam to retire from the military and run for the Senate. I rolled that over in my mind. He thinks Adam could be president someday. - Tess, I chose this quote because it shows how fast Tess can make a connection.
Page 350- "You'll do it?" I asked, terrified to hope for even a second that the answer might be yes. "You'll get the pardon?" "You'll save Ivy?" William Keyes- my paternal grandfather- put a hand under my chin. He tilted my face toward his. "That depends," he said, "on whether or not you'll do something for me." - Conversation between William Keyes and Tess, I chose this conversation because Tess persuaded William Keyes, who hates Ivy, to save Ivy from the kidnapper. Tess learned how to get what she wants, and how to do it.

Goals/Purposes of Writing:

What social commentary do you think your author was making with this novel? What is the author saying or warning about today's world?

I think that the author wrote this book in order to experiment with values. Tess spent most of her life thinking that her parents died, her sister, that could take care of her, left her, and that her only family was her grandpa that had alzheimer's. When she moved to D.C., she was mad because she thought that her sister didn't want to take care of her. After living in D.C. and researching, Ivy told Tess that she was her mother. Tess leaves and goes to visit her grandpa. When she is in Boston, she gets kidnapped by a rogue secret service agent. Kostas, the secret service agent, planned on killing Tess and Ivy. Ivy made a deal with him. Ivy for Tess. He still wanted to kill Tess, but Ivy told him that Tess was her daughter. He knocked Tess out and traded her for Ivy. I later learned that the reason for the kidnapping was because Kostas's son was going to be executed. Kostas's understood the value of Tess to Ivy. The author always had people questioning their values and who was important to them. In our society today, people value money more than their family. The author is trying to tell people this.
Page 286- "You're my kid." She repeated the words. "Mine, Tess."- Ivy to Tess, I chose this quote because it was the moment that Ivy told Tess that she wasn't her sister, but her mom.
Page 321- " He wasn't going to let me go, but when Ivy told him I was her daughter-" She'd asked him, one parent to another. And he'd let me go." I chose this quote because Tess figured out why she was let go. She understood that Kostas valued his son and his life. Ivy valued Tess's life and made Kostas realize how much Tess means to her.

The Government killed the Supreme Court Justice and covered it up as a heart attack. The Government is also getting Pierce, the top nomination, to become the new supreme court justice.
Page 229- "And I asked her if her husband was really moving at an accelerated rate toward nominating Pierce." - Tess to the First Lady
Page 191,192- " In order for Vivvie's dad to kill his grandfather, someone had to get Justice Marquette into surgery first." -Tess to Henry Marquette

Thinking back to the aspects of the Hero's Journey that we studied during the Odyssey, What are some of the elements that are also utilized in your novel and with your protagonist?

Some elements are call to adventure, threshold guardians, and challenges and temptations. Tess's had a call to adventure two times. When Ivy made her move to D.C., and when Vivvie told Tess that her dad killed the Supreme Court Justice. Tess had many threshold guardians. She is always doubting herself and the world she lives in, but she never shows fear. Tess has had many challenges and temptations. She has ran into many dead ends with her investigation, to find the killer. Ivy has told her multiple times to stop investigating because it is dangerous. Tess has the temptation to continue, and give in.
Page 187- "My sister thought bringing me to live with her was a mistake." - Tess, I chose this quote because Tess wasn't supposed to be involved with Ivy's lifestyle. Also know as, Tess's call to adventure.
Page 186- "Every once in a while, the phone rang. Ivy. Bodie. And then, finally, a number I didn't recognize. I hesitated. Probably, it was Ivy. Probably, I should just let it ring. But what if it was Vivvie?"- Tess, I chose this quote because Tess hesitated and let her thoughts control her actions. She lets her mind get the best of her.
Page 206- "Ivy said this was dangerous. That's why she wanted to keep you out of it." - Vivvie to Tess

What are the common ideas taking place in your novel? In what ways do the common ideas effect your characters choices or actions?
Common ideas that are taking place in my novel are self- responsibility and questioning. Tess is trying to help Vivvie with her dad situation and figure out who was behind the murder. She hasn't gone to Ivy or anyone for help. Tess is very meticulous and if she doesn't know a detail, she will ask. She is always questioning her friends, her sister, and herself.
Page 157- "She and Captain Pentagon had an errand to run." Bodie's answer was cryptic. I tried to figure out what kind of "errand" Adam and Ivy might be running this early in the morning, but came up empty."

Include one quote from the novel to describe your character. Include the page number you find the quote on.

My main character's name is Tess. She is strange, nosy, defensive, caring, she hates bullies, and as Asher would say, interesting. She has hair that is a shade too light to be considered black. I like Tess because she stands up for what she believes in and she cares about people that she doesn't know very well.
Page 104, 105- "He was probably sitting here, at my table, for the same reason he'd gone up of the chapel roof. I was interesting." - Tess, I chose this quote because Tess figured out why Asher wanted to be her friend.

What theme topics are you seeing in your novel? Explain a bit how your protagonist is reacting to these topics.

Some theme topics I see are power, good vs. evil, friendship, and discovery. Tess just discovered that her friend's dad killed the supreme court justice and that he was mostly likely paid to do it. Vivvie's dad also hit Vivvie and gave her a black eye. She didn't want to leave her house because she was afraid she would be taken away from her dad. Tess is also figuring out friendships. She is friends with Vivvie, but a boy named Asher keeps trying to be her friend. Tess is very nosy and likes to know things. She is always asking questions, trying to discover new things.
Page 109- "You have to come back to school eventually," I said gently. What I didn't say was: Who or what are you avoiding?"- Tess to Vivvie, I chose this quote because it shows the moment that Tess figured out something was wrong with Vivvie.

At the beginning, the setting is on a ranch in Montana. It is relocated to Washington D.C.
Page 8- "If Ivy had deigned to fly out to Montana and grace the ranch with her presence, she'd done so for a reason."
Page 15- "If the silent treatment was getting to Ivy, she showed no sign of it as we navigated the DC airport."
I don't know much about the setting in D.C. I know that Ivy lives in a house with two floors. She works on the first floor and lives on the second floor. Tess's room is small and has a window seat. I will learn more about the setting as I keep reading.
