Topics about culture can be a very serious topic. For example, Christians believe that medicine isn't something that can heal mankind, but praying can. Some may say the opposite. Beliefs can really change people's perspective of things, and as they do that, their words can impact people in a really harsh way.

Most of my family are Chistian Science workers. When I was small, I used to always tell my family that I wanted to be just like them when I grow up. But as I got older, I didn't really believe much in God. And if I said that right in front of my family's face, they might look at me differently; try to change my way of thinking, I guess. Although I may not be like them, at least they are encouraging me to do something much bigger. It's sort of a positive/negative thing.

"These sorts of emotions can disrupt family relationships. The effect of the hardship depends on the way it affects daily life— in other words, the emotional response of the family and the individual are what determines the psychological effect of the event." (pg.2) "There is an important distinction between adoles- cents who are well liked and those who are identified as popu- lar, the latter signifying those who are at the top of a domi- nance hierarchy."
