A popular question is "Why do llamas spit?" The answer to this question is simple. Llamas spit when they are annoyed, scared, or trying to show superiority in their herd. The most common purpose of spitting is because the Llamas feel threatened. he more annoyed or scared the llamas are, the more likely they are to spit.

Texas Horned Lizard

The Texas horned lizard has a very unusual way of defending itself against predators. The Texas Horned Lizard shoots blood out of its eyes aiming to hit its predator. The lizard's bumpy and sandy colored skin helps it to blend in with its environment, but predators can still spot the small lizards making it so that the lizards have to have a crazy defense mechanism. The lizard shoots blood out of its eyelids by creating pressure behind the eyes forcing the blood to shoot out. The lizards are able to shoot the blood up to 3 feet! The lizards usually will not shoot blood at humans because they do not see them as a threat, however, they will shoot at coyotes and hawks. The lizards also puff up very big in an effort to scare off their predators with their large growing size.

Since every animal has some kind of defense mechanism it has to be beneficial in some way right? I think it is very beneficial to animals. If animals did not have defense mechanisms then it would be easy for them to killed and then eaten. Animals use defense as ways to protect themselves and as a way to survive. For example, if the Texas horned lizard did not shoot blood or puff up, then the lizards would be an easy target and they would probably have a very small population. However, if the lizards could not shoot blood or puff up to defend themselves they would probably become very good at hiding from predators.

Adaptation

Adaptation works when certain behaviors benefit the animal. Since defensive behavior works to help the animals survive, it is passed down from generation to generation. An example of this is the Texas horned lizard. The lizard learned how to shoot blood from its eyes in order to defend itself since that worked to fend off predators, the behavior was passed down. Animals that have effective defensive behaviors will have a higher fitness. The animals will also be able to survive well within their community, giving them the opportunity to reproduce and have offspring that have the defense behaviors of their parents and ancestors.
