Helga Weiss was a normal Jewish school girl who lived in Prague, she had many friends and always enjoyed playing with them. When World War 2 started Helga began to notice a revile in society for the Jewish people, then she was kicked out of school and her father's business was taken away from him. Helga was 11 years old (in 1939) when she was sent to the Terezin ghetto with her family. After 2 years in the ghetto Helga and her family was sent to Auschwitz. Helga was only 15 at the time, you had to be eligible to work if you were to live. Camp rules say that if your were a child or elder you were to be killed upon arrival. Helga and her mother subterfuge one of the most trusted guards, they told him that she was 16. After land indigenous process of persuasion the lie worked and they were in the camp to work. After a few months in the camp Helga and her mother found out that her father was killed in the gas chamber. It was very hard on Helga and her mother to hear the news, but if they were to stay alive they had to keep working. When the Germans heard the news that the Soviets were going to storm the camps they got rid of all evidence and sent the remaining people on a 16 day death march. Helga was one of the people that was sent on the death march, she survived, her brother however died on the march. Helga was very malnourished and sick when she was liberated. Weeks after she was liberated her memoir about her camp experiences was published. Helga was then reunited with one of her closest friends from the ghetto, they got married.

Despite popular delights, Helga says that not all of her ghetto memories were bad. Helga met her first love and her husband at the ghetto. She made many close friends there and had many good memories at the ghetto. Helga is still alive today because she lied to the guard, Helga was clever and mature. Her wit and maturity is what kept her alive in the camp. Many families that were sent to the camp took cake and other foods. They ate a little of the food everyday, it kept Helga and her mother stronger than the others so they could work.
