The story takes place during the time the Ottoman Empire sieges Constantinople, and has very immersive world building. I’m not the biggest fan of historical fiction, but the writing style and pacing were amazing. It reads like a fantasy novel, and the characters read a lot older than they are, which I find appealing. The characters themselves are probably the best part of the book. The whole story felt like the climax, but just kept getting more eventful. I really, really enjoyed this book. It's quite dark and deals with super heavy subjects so when reading people should be wary as it can be quite triggering. The characters feel like real people and so sometimes it is hard to read because the things they go through are really awful. This book details Bryan Stevenson’s life as he and his law firm try to get wrongly convicted/unfairly sentenced prisoners off death row, as well as those with lengthy sentences. It was a very moving book, as you can see how someone's race, gender, class, and even upbringing can alter the way someone is treated by the law. I would recommend everyone to read this book, as it is enlightening and accessible.

The world before it ended is just as much a part of the story as the aftermath. It really allows you to feel the grief of what has been lost. I definitely enjoyed reading this book and really liked the way the author introduced each character. However I  didn’t think this book was “scary” or “frightening” but it was still a good read. I’ve read some reviews about this book and I do agree with one person saying that the book started off strong but after awhile it gets a little tiring. Although it was a very long winded read I did enjoy it for the most part.

This is a utopian world inside of a dystopian world, and the issues of escapism are always present. The thrilling race to find the ultimate prize balances out the two extremes, and overall this book is awesome.
