How can a writer be artistically generous without the inclusion of excessive detail? How essential is detail to writing? 

The author mentions that the main element of fiction is the fusion of character and event, as well as the way the latter reveals the former. How exactly can a writer tell when this has been achieved? Is it important to emphasize the character, the event, or should it be a balance of both?

The author also mentions that the revision process is a combination of both cutting away and a constant layering of the language. How do you think repeating this multiple times helps with the overall revision process? What do you think the author means when they say “layering of the language” while also claiming we should avoid the use of excessive detail?
