Description:
The photo attached is of an astrology chart. Many elements are tied into the chart including, the name of the zodiac, the symbol of each zodiac, representing animal and there relation to the sun.
Connection:
The pseudoscience red flag, ancient wisdom can be applied to this photo. The idea that this chart that was created in 2nd millennium BC is more accurate then science created today is not ideal. Another pseudoscience red flag that could be applied is proof by verbosity. The chart may also look intimidating because there are so many different elements. Although there is a lot of information, this doesn't mean that the information is factual.

Description:
This video is of an astrologer guessing peoples zodiac signs. He does not know the people before the reading and he only asks each person a small amount of questions. He also sometimes asks to see the persons hands and ears. After guessing everyone's zodiac, they reveal what they really are. The results and not in favor of Ray (the astrologist). He had only guessed four correctly.

Connection:
The video connects to the Appeal to authority red flag. The beginning of the video has you certain that Ray is going to guess each persons zodiac sign correctly, because he is a professional astrologer of 45-50 years. You would believe what he's saying has legitimacy due to his credibility.

Description:
Horoscope.com is where I frequently read my own horoscope. I am a Sagittarius and find that my characteristics are very similar to my zodiac. I am constantly finding connections between my own life and my horoscope.
Connection:
The connection I have made to this website and my own personal thoughts is the pseudoscience red flag, confirmation bias. Confirmation bias is when we remember a event that agrees with our believes, and when we chose to ignore statements or events that disagree with our believes. For example, if my horoscope has 50% of claims that are not accurate to my own life, I will only remember the other 50% that is accurate. This can also relate back to the hit or miss theory. The misses might have been as regular as the hits but the person will only remember the hits.

This proves to me how caught up people can get regarding astrology, even though there is really no proof behind its legitimacy.
Connection:
The pseudoscience red flag, Proof by verbosity can be applied to the image. The person in the meme is providing a large amount of information to give the appearance that with that much information must be true. The many different elements prove that what shes talking about must be factual.

Penny, one of the main characters starts by announcing shes a Sagittarius. Sheldon quickly shuts her down by stating that astrology is not a science nor does it have scientific proof.
Connection:
As learned throughout the course content, Debunking by definition is to expose the falseness or hollowness of (a myth, idea, or belief). Sheldon is quick to disapprove of the topic because it has not been scientifically proven by any means.

Description:
The photo I have attached outlines the signs associated with the four elements.
Fire signs (Aries, Sagittarius, Leo) are typically self-sufficient, spontaneous and possess a tremendous zest for life. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) are practical, grounded and dependable. These don’t like to take big risks. Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) love to analyze, synthesize any situation. Water signs (Pisces, Scorpio, Cancer) are intuitive and sensitive, and they feel more intensely than the rest.
Connection:
Emotional Connection is the connection to this photo. Those of a specific zodiac sign that can relate to their elements attributes might be more interested in learning more. Once they find a connection in there own personal life or personal characteristics, they will be more invested in the topic.

Vice, a video and journalism company frequently writes about world topics that are common in society.
Connection:
Halfway through the video, the host asked people why they believe in astrology. Answers varied from person to person. Answers include, there horoscope helped them make daily decisions, they had heard something positive about their sign and helps them with their self confidence, and provides a sense of comfort. The biggest reason for belief shown throughout the clip is emotional connection.

Post #11 Reflective Response:

1. The topic that was most surprising to me was how much money is being generated off Astrology. For a birth chart reading, some professional astrologers charge more then a couple hundred dollars an hour. This really surprised me considering people are paying for information that hasn't been scientifically proven. People can also find this information online free of cost. I even discovered there is a makeup brand that sells lipstick for each zodiac sign. It was just very surprising how much astrology was being used to make money off of.
2. The topic is very interesting to me. It is something of frequent conversation between my friends and I. I also do a lot of reading about the different houses, planets and symbolism regarding astrology. I feel I have the same characteristics of my sign. I am skeptical of how factual the information is, but I do find the concept very interesting to learn.
3. I found my research on the planets and their meanings most interesting. I have done a lot of research on each zodiac, but have yet to really dive into the planets. The website I attached in post #9 laid out the information very easy for me to understand. Now when I read my horoscope, I understand when certain planets are in retrograde and what that means for the month, week, or day
4. I am most likely to remember the Vice video, Why the World is Still Fascinated with Astrology. The video was extremely interesting to me, hearing views from professional astrologer, normal everyday people and the host himself. Many had different views regarding why they believe, or why they think others believe.
5. I believe the most harmful pseudoscience belief is Emotional connection. It is very hard to change anyone mind about a topic once they are emotionally invested. Someone who is emotionally connected might do or pay any money to fulfill themselves. Someone who is emotionally connected to a pseudoscience might also be sick or damaged. A pseudoscience may convince this already damaged person of things that are non factual, resulting in more damage. The least harmful pseudoscience belief is the Unexplained. I think that there's no way to really control this belief. People are allowed to create and make up whatever they believe in order to explain something. I think that's just human nature to create such ideas.
6. The list of red flags is the information I would pass on to a family member. I feel like its very important for everyone to be familiar with the red flags. As interesting as pseudoscience may be, and how nice it would be if pseudosciences actually benefited our lives and health, the truth is they wont. Spending money pseudosciences that really wont benefit you in the ways you would like them to isn't ideal. Also, resorting to a pseudoscience instead of an actual proven science may be extremely harmful to ones health in regards to the situation.
