How Gregor lives for others

" If I were to try that with my boss, I'd be thrown out on the spot. Still, who knows whether that mightn't be really good for me? If I didn't hold back for my parents' sake, I'd have quit ages ago. I would've gone to the boss and told him just what I think from the bottom of my heart" (4).

Gregor feel like he is trapped with a boss who does not care about him. He mentions how he would like to tell off his boss and quit, but he will not until he pays his family off. Gregor is untimely not living a life of his own but a life that he thinks he has to live for his family to be happy. This affects him mentally because he feels unnoticed and un-human.

"Once I've got together the money to pay off my parents' debt to him—that should take another five or six years—I'll do it for sure. Then I'll make the big break. In any case, right now I have to get up. My train leaves at five o'clock" (4).

Gregor is very devoted to his work because he feels as if he needs to. When a person feels like they are forced to live their life for someone else, part of their humanity is taken away from them. The quote is showing how Gregor feels about his work but also why he is continuing with his work. Gregor will continue to work until his family is payed back. By Gregor being the only one in the house hold bringing in money, Gregor feels obligated to continue working, even though all he wants to do is tell his boss how he really feels. This can be another factor to Gregor loosing his humanity

Excellent breakdown here.

How Gregor feels invisible

"How weird it is to sit up at that desk and talk down to the employee from way up there. The boss has trouble hearing, so the employee has to step up quite close to him" (4).

Gregor's boss seems to not care for any of his employee's. In the story is his described through moments happening in Gregor's life as a part f what took his humanity. In this specific quote, the author emphasizes how the boss talks down to his employees, showing his flawed personality. Gregor's boss overworks him to him greatest limit.

"For instance, when I come back to the inn during the course of the morning to write up the necessary orders, these gentlemen are just sitting down to breakfast"(4).

This part of the story is showing how Gregor feel less noticed as a person when he talks about a group of gentlemen sitting down and enjoying each other's company over breakfast. It made me realize that Gregor may not have any relationships in his life with friends, which is why this may be different for Gregor to see and why he is complaining about it.

He is isolated

"Now, quite apart from the fact that the doors were locked, should he really call out for help? In spite of all his distress, he was unable to suppress a smile at
this idea" (7).

Gregor does not feel safe in his own home. He locks his door but he is in his house with his family. This shows he does not feel safe in his own home. The quote mentions how the idea of calling his family for help was not something Gregor wanted to do. This part helped me understand more why Gregor thinks he is a cockroach. While Gregor has no relationships in his life, he feels alone and isolates himself from both his family and the world around him. In the story Gregor does not have any relationships with friends or his family which ultimately takes his sense of humanity from him.

"Hardly was he inside his room when the door was pushed shut very quickly, bolted fast, and barred... She cried out "Finally!"
to her parents, as she turned the key in the lock" (45).

Gregor is once again isolated alone in his room after his sister locks him in there. This only made Gregor loose his sense of humanity even more. After being locked in, Gregor no longer can move and feels less human than he did when waking up. As Gregor feels more invisible and alone he starts to feel as if he will become so small the he will disappear. Ultimately he comes to the point where he does disappear and dies, leaving his parents to use his sister as the next provider for their financial expenses.

Without any human connection, eventually a person will feel isolated and much more smaller than they are. In The Metamorphosis, Gregor loses his sense of humanity for multiple reasons. He lived for others rather than himself, this being his family.
He feels invisible for many reasons, two being the way his boss treats him and the relationships he does not have in his life. This leads into the fact that he is not loved by his family nor do they care for him. As the story progresses, Gregor mentions how he is the money pit for his family. This makes him feel isolated, as he locks his doors at night.

"‘We must try to get rid of it,’ the sister now said decisively to the father, for the mother, in her coughing fit, wasn’t listening to anything, ‘it is killing you both"(43).

In this part, Grete refers to Gregor as an "it" rather than a human. This helps to show how Gregors family does not love him. He is talked about as if he was less than human and is only used to provide his family with all their financial expenses. This helps add to the fact that Gregor lost his sense of humanity throughout these various moments. Gregor lacks a health relationship in his life. He feels as if he is not loves by anyone and is alone. The idea of not being loved, eve by family, can result in someone loosing their sense of humanity. This explains why Gregor has such a hard time living his life. He believes he is small and thinks he is an insect because of scenarios like this, when he was hopping his family would care about him but knew they wouldn't.
