The "variety of sympathy" comes from, as the fact stands, that many are immigrants, and that means that they have opposing view point on how America should take a stance (See the Irish, Germans and Jews vs. Protestants). Meaning, with such a ---- in the public sphere, America declared neutrality (for now).

He considers Americans to be people who will support neutrality and friendliness instead of aggression during the war. They variety of sympathy comes from people with ties to the countries at war. German immigrants and Slavic people might support the Central powers, while English or Russian immigrants might favor the allies. if Wilson were to choose a side, it might split different cultures apart, and internal issues could start in the U.S.

A - Woodrow Wilson's speech is directed at undecided or decided Americans on neutrality.
P-most Americans were quite happy that their country had a long tradition of avoiding European conflicts. They did not want to waste American lives on a war most considered pointless, and they did not want to disrupt their economy just to preserve a treaty. But Americans also had strong ties to Europe, namely lineage. Wilson believed that if the United States could act impartially, not favoring one side or the other, it could actually benefit from the war. It could keep its economy strong by providing the European countries with food and supplies, and when the warring countries had had enough fighting, the United States could play the role of peacekeeper.
P- The purpose of his speech was to get heavy words over war and the destruction it will cause. It was a warning to US citizens against taking sides, fearing the endangerment of wider U.S. policy. Also to declare neutrality
Y

H(istorical Context)- Since the late 1800s, countries in Europe had been preparing for war with each other. The tension of a war finally erupted in 1914. Most Americans, while supporting the Entente Allies, didn’t want to be involved in the Great War. America tried to distance itself from European politics and wanted to continue doing so during the war (that obviously worked out)

A(udience)- The intended audience was the American people, especially the few who wanted America to participate in the war. It also sent a message to the already participating countries of America’s stance.

P(urpose)- It’s purpose was to show that while most Americans did side with the Allies, America wasn’t going to give their whole support to either side and continue to trade goods with both. It was also issued to keep Americans from worrying about having to deal with the terrors of war (again, that obviously worked out)

P(oint of View)- The US government and Wilson didn’t want to get involved in a war that seemingly had nothing to do with America.

Y- It’s significant because it shows where America stood for most of the war. While we did end helping and officially siding with the Allies, for the better half of the war we didn’t want to do anything.

Wilson’s perspective- He had promised the American people to keep the country out of the war, but had to finally declare war on Germany. Wilson believed in a free country and a country that listened to its people. Due to the different groups of Americans (German, English, etc.) it was hard to fully decide which side deserved a voice. The German-Americans were inclined to support Germany while the rest supported the Allies. Wilson wanted America to be a nation that were stronger together.
