People in the "real world" deal a lot with their self appearance or insecurities which could lead to depression. It's a bad thing having to deal with because not an easy issue that you can just get over. This issue needs to be solved because there are many people who take their own lives or who are just thinking suicidal. This can affect many people like friends, family, and maybe even strangers. The author let's the reader know that this is the issue by talking about how depression is a real cause that happens with many people in the world. There are hospitals, hotlines, facilities for people to talk about and help better themselves. In the book and the movie there's an example of how this character called himself into a hospital for help. In the movie, he stays in that mental hospital for 1 week. If he didn't get any better he had to stay. On the first day he was there, he saw there were more people that have worse issues than he does. The author himself (Ned Vizzini) that wrote this book also suffered himself with this kind of issue.

Craig said that he got sexually abused and beaten by his dad. With what was going on through his head; he felt the need to take his own life but he didn't. Instead, he called himself into a hospital to better himself. What he didn't realize is that the people in that facility has a worse case of depression, or another kind of illness. When he talks to Dr. Minerva, it's hard for him to explain what he is trying to say. Most of the time he feels like he doesn't have any friends or family to talk to about his problems because they wouldn't understand. By the end, Craig helps a man overcome his depression.
